EMU: 465 (which is kind of a cheat because of the two varieties, but I like the sound of both)
DMU: 170/171
LU: D78

DMUs: 175, 180 and 185 (there is an absolutely immense sound from 185132 at Middlesbrough on YouTube somewhere!), and Voyagers/Meridians are nice! (there is also an ace video of 222012 revving up through Attenborough on an ECS).
EMUs: 323, 350, 373, 377, 390, 395, 444, 450, 465.
Tube/Light Rail: Manchester Metrolink, Midland Metro, Jubilee stock.

DMU: 142 (Unless its going round Skelton Junction!)
EMU: 323
and I haven't got a lot to do comparisons with for light rail, so it'll have to be T68a (Metrolink 20XX trams)

Just goes to prove that Germans do have a sense of humour, you'll notice as Taurus steps up though it's switching frequencies it does so in a musical scale that is actually correct notes, until it's final switching frequency (where it needs to be most efficient)

Although I do like the Formula 1-syle chopper sound on the traction motors of the Class 465/365 (Metro-Cammell/GEC-Alsthom), I mostly prefer the rather industrial and old-school sound of the Class 319s, especially when under AC power, as the 50hz hums in the PTSO add to the atmosphere of such a BREL masterpiece. It also brings back childhood memories of travelling with my grandparents from Bedford to St Pancras, and with some family and friends on the entire length of the Thameslink route.

Has to be 323's I think - do love the sound of them. Quite like 350's as well and the 390 slightly odd sound which sounds like just a fan powering up.

For diesels, 185's

DMU-wise it's gotta be a 158! None of this muffled lawn-mower stuff you get from newish diesel lumps, just proper noise :D

Loco's I'd opt for a pair of 37s under the trainshed somewhere like Temple Meads or York, and of course the good old Valenta, with as much black clag as possible!

EMU's probably something like a 313 or 442, with some proper motor noise rather than a washing machine sound effects you get from the new stuff :|

And LU I really don't know, so my light rail choice is a Blackpool tram, anything with the original motors and rattly bogies, preferably running on the old rails before they relaid it all!

You just can't touch the old school sound effects ;)

NIR 80 Class :D

Also like D stock acceleration though. Exactly what a well-built EMU should sound like (compare 313s etc which also sound good but not quite as much; in practice they aren't nearly as good overall).

The only old school sound still to be heard on passenger workings is the NIR 450 class DEMUs. Once the last of these has been withdrawn in a couple of months it's all over sound-wise.

Maybe, but it's a pretty anaemic sound compared with the EE roar of the DEMUs. 450 class farewell tour on 18th Feb BTW. Run by MRSI and going Belfast > Dundalk > Bangor > Belfast > Antrim > Lisburn > Belfast.

Overall the 1996 stock on the tube.
However mainline... In order.
170
185
142
15*'s

Used all of them in my composition at uni last year, the 170 and 185 were the most distinct. In fact the 185 I recorded at Marsden blended perfectly with the helicopter that flew over at the same time. 170's (Or at least the TPE fleet) sounded like helicopters!

I find it hard to decide just one for each.
DEMU- 221's etc
DMU- 156, 158, particularly perki ones like 158817, 185.
EMU- 323, 390. Also Merseyrail 507/508.
