Can anybody tell me why platforms 1&2 at Norwood Junction are either side of a single track? My first thoughts are that this might once have been two bay platforms but I can't see any evidence of this.

Are there other stations that have a single through line with two platform faces?

Canary Wharf on the DLR - the train doors open on both sides on all 3 platforms as I recall.

(terminating service calls in the middle platform so is cross-platform change to the through services on both sides)

Central line at Stratford westbound- recently had the monitors for the driver upgraded to allow both faces to be used safely.

Also Underground, at Uxbridge the central track has platform faces both sides, but only one is used (no real need to use both).

Some metro systems elsewhere have been deliberately designed to have two faces per track, with one side designated for entry and the other for exit- known as "The Spanish Solution".

Another one on LU: Arnos Grove on the Piccadilly. The middle road (usually used for terminating trains) has a platform face either side.

IIRC I think Plats 6 and 7 were originally the parcels and mail platforms for Guildford and the arrangement was chosen because the mail could quickly be loaded from one side and unloaded from the other.

Just thinking of an example on a heritage line: isn't Platform 4? (the one nearest the station building) at Horsted Keynes also a single track with two platform faces?

Think Ulverston might do, although not 100% sure.

As for bays, Scarborough, Sheffield and Carlisle have bays with two platform sides.

The District line has this at Barking (P2). The idea was to provide easy interchange with both of Platforms 1 and 4.

Platform 1 at nottingham has a 'platform' on either side of the track. albeit one of them isnt used

Platform 5 at lincoln has a platform either side of the track, however there is space for 2 lines bttween them ,so for example if it was in use, you couldnt get out from both sides of the train if they where both in use

Sevenoaks has a through platform, used for terminating thameslink services, with two platform faces. One side in use, the other is the old mail platform.

These platforms seem so dangerous in third rail land. They just look wrong!

Ascot was a godsend during race meetings in the days of slamdoors as the packed trains full of punters could exit on both sides (on up trains at least). Even now I believe that the guards open the doors on both sides during royal week to clear the trains as quickly as possible.

Finsbury Park is one I can think of.

That almost caught me out a short while ago. I caught a train from Kings Cross and wanted alight at Finsbury Park. As the train pulled in I went to (what I thought was) the correct side for the platform, only to realise later that you have to exit on the other side! Seems a bit silly to me.
