Saturday 21st January seen Sulzer B113 & Hunslet 102 transferred to Cultra's Ulster folk & transport museum for future preservation and to be on display to the public. The locomotives were hauled by NIR's finest 111 Class, loco's 111 & 113.

The transfer departed Whitehead at 23:45 arriving in Cultra at 01:40.

Photos from the day commencing with the shunt with 142 at lunchtime until the arrival at Cultra, are now online at:

I didn't know that was happening last weekend :(
On one hand it's good to see 102 safe. On the other it's sad to think that 8CSVT will never be heard again

It'll be nice that from now on there'll be regular opportunities for the public to view both these locos; B113 was rarely been on view to the public when it was stored at Inchicore (the staff family open day back in 2009 was the last event if I'm not mistaken). 2422 must have made an interesting sight sandwiched between the two 111s on the return leg.

Funny how there was two 113s in the one formation.

Having woken from a deep slumber, I couldn't quite decide what I was seeing as it approached Central at 03.15.

Yeah 2422 (which was on loan from the RPSI to the UFTM since the mid90s) was transferred to Whitehead to make room for the two diesels (I believe the other space was vacant due to RB3 departing the museum ten years ago).

Not a lot of the 1950s built CIÉ carriages have survived, but strangely of the four diners built in 1956 (Nos.2419-22) three are preserved: 2419 at the DCDR, 2421 is used with the RPSI's Heritage set in Dublin and 2422 now at Whitehead.

I suppose in a way it's a pity that carriages are somewhat underrepresented at the UFTM but life ain't perfect I guess.

It comes down to the stock answer (no pun intended) of space. Would be great to see more preserved coaching stock but unless it is actually in use, it takes up valuable storage at the few preservation sites we have which are already under pressure in terms of space.

The DCDR carriage shed will certainly provide a good secure home for some more lucky carriages, once the connections are complete. By comparision, the NRM at York is vast and even that is full, with countless items stored outside and off site. It's true to say that space is one of the most valuable commodities that preservation groups have.

The NRM opened a museum at Shildon. And they loan out items to other preserved railways.

Indeed, the DCDR Gallery will make for an excellent location to display their vintage carriages. I haven't been up there for a while but from the photos I've seen it looks excellent.

Not sure when it's due to open to the public. It certainly provides a lot more secure space along with the new loco shed.

Hopefully around May-ish... It's still being fitted out with the exhibition display, and the PW gang are feverishly working on getting Road 3 connected so the final shunt can take place. What's more extraordinary about this is the PW head just celebrated his 80th birthday there in January!!

Even so, only a proportion of our stock can find a home inside the Gallery, if only someone would build us a nice big workshop and storage shed out in Inch Business Park!! ;) Based on Ballymena PW yard and building would be nice... ;)

You'll need another big new shed for the 6 piece 450, complete DD set plus 201 plus all 3 blue GMs in due course :D

Two serious questions however:

Will 2509 have a place inside the new building?

When do you hope to have Sugar Loco 1 back in action. I think it was mentioned elsewhere that it was sometime this year?

He's the youngest memeber of the PW gang too! ; )

It would certainly be great to have a big shed out at Inch Business park. I wouldn't have to come through Downpatrick to reach the work then.

Don't forget the 2700s! ;)

We're going to need a bigger yard. And a whole load more volunteers...

Seriously though, these aren't due for withdrawal yet are they, they've only recently been refurbed? Have to say, they look very odd without the connecting door on the end and have lost the resemblence to the BR 158s. I remember when the 2700s were introduced and I thought it was amazing the similarity they had to the 158 in the UK.

I wish I was joking(!), but the 2700s really are up for mothballing soon. It seems likely that the 2600s and 2800s will work their current services (ICRs have recently been deployed on some of the Dundalk/Drogheda services, allowing 29000s to bump 2800s from some of their links). Hopefully the remaining 28/29 worked Sligo/Rosslare services will get ICRs too.

But yeah it seems that the 2700s have not long to go.

No, it won't. Not yet anyway. The Gallery is primarily for carriages and the selection is being 'guided' by the consultants. This doesn't mean it won't be at some point if the display is rotated, but at the moment it's too much of a wreck to even be safe to go on display.

And No. 1 should be complete by the summer, we believe.

Well I suppose one is called "Belfast & County Down" afterall... LOL... ;)

Well, not quite... ;) but the age profile is pretty high... one of the team retired last year due to health.

The new yard was mentioned in the Downpatrick Masterplan by the DSD, along with moving the Ulsterbus maintenance depot out there. However we shall see what happens, if anything!

Always willing to lend a hand if I'm about and not othwerwise engaged with traction!

We all know how 'solid' masterplans tend to be with DSD. The Belfast one is quite hilarious given what it sets out for the area I live in...
