I was just going to say Altnabreac! It's isolatedness scares me slightly, I couldn't imagine being stranded there!

From the NRE website:

"Rail Replacement: [tick] Taxi's are usually arranged for passengers travelling to/from Altnabreac - Access to the station is by small vehicles only."

Looking at Google Maps though, I can't imagine that being a nice taxi ride!

How unusual! It amazes me that such a station exists, then you have huge towns like Gosport and Newcastle-under-Lyme that don't have stations.

Let's just say it's not a pleasant place to be! At all.

Aww shame! Westgate has more life to it I think ;)

Location and proximity of an operational line to it. Gosport et al have no lines nearby suitable to justify a station using their name. Altnabreac has an operational line running through it.

I know, it beggars belief. There were lines years ago though.

Loughborough Junction appears to be frequented more by druggies and vagrants than genuine passengers at night

Doleham (between Hastings and Ashford) has few trains and no pubs or shops within several miles of the station.

I was thinking of Doleham too. Although Pevensey Bay isn't much better in terms of frequency.

Apart from number of trains, I think Dumpton Park has to be one of the least friendly stations I've seen. I'm not sure I'd like to be stranded at Bethnal Green either to be honest, purely based on how run down the station is. Of course you could take a walk and get the Central line though...

Habrough.

It wouldn't be too bad getting stranded there, as there's a pub next to the station, & Immingham is only a couple of miles away.

Thornton Abbey on the Barton on Humber branch line isn't too clever to get stranded at. Miles from the nearest village (Thornton Curtis, which doesn't have a lot!), and only a bus shelter on the Barton-bound platform. Wouldn't want to get stranded there after the last train on a Saturday night on a windy & wet night...

Yeah, I think Loughborough Junction has to be one of the most unpleasant and just plain scary stations in Greater London. Though there are a few others in South London that aren't lovely too...

Lympstone Commando sounds unwelcoming (except in some circumstances)

I don't know, it's got a bog standard bus shelter and a nice view of the Exe Estuary to look out onto! Mind you, it's a rather odd station now - It's sole purpose is to deliver future Royal Marine Commandos to well, Lympstone Commando, but whereas orginally it was just a station with access only to the training centre, it now has the Exe Estuary Cycle Path running between it! (Between the station and the Training centre), so really if you ended up being stranded there, you could just walk along to Exton - 5/8 minutes or Lympstone Village

As for one of the worst stations - Reading. Before it's reconstruction / deconstruction, it was abit of a wind tunnel...Now, there's very little roof left on the main platform 7, as well as the heavily reduced platform width which clogs up in the rush hour - that in itself is a nightmare!

Healing is probably worse!

My two penn'orth: Moss Side or Salwick or Gainsborough Central.

If you get stuck at Healing, there's only a Post Office & a chippy nearby.2 brick-built waiting shelters aren't too bad for keeping dry, though. Otherwise, it's a 10 minute walk to the bus stop on the other side of the village! Half hourly buses between Grimsby & Immingham during the day (hourly after about 18:00) means you might not get stuck for too long!

Errr, Smethwick!
Bearley on the Hatton-Stratford branch would kinda suck. If you are stranded you might get lucky and be able to jump on a bus, but it looks like there are only two or three buses a day so you probably won't.

X20 Birmingham to Stratford service along the A34 stops at the end of the station drive, hourly Mon-Sat until early evening, 7/8 journeys on Sundays.

I would imagine that if the last train on the North Downs Line was stopped at Betchworth there could be problems. It's not particularly accessible to replacement buses, the number 32 bus on the nearby A25 finishes in the early evening and the gastropubs would probably be closed. The petrol station up the road is a bit dingy and it's a bit of a walk to either Dorking or Reigate, neither of which is particularly enthralling late at night.

In short, you'd have to get a taxi.

On the subject of Altnabreac... well, I imagine you wouldn't have the problem of drunken youths there, since there probably aren't any significant quantities of youths for 75 miles in any given direction. And the station shelter is probably still pristine from when it was replaced, albeit a bit chilly except in the summer. There is also a payphone, a help point and (oddly) a cycle rack.

I know a couple of train enthusiasts who managed to get stranded at Kingscote on the Bluebell Railway after the last train had departed.

I was wondering what is least welcoming station members would like to be stranded at. Mine is Berney Arms.

My claim to fame is actually to have been stranded there! I was with some friends a few years ago and we planned to get the last train of the day to Norwich, which called at around 5 but during summer only when daylight allowed (as Berney Arms has no lighting). We saw the train in the distance, we hailed it, and it sailed right through without stopping. <(

I used the helpline to call control, who were a bot bemused about what to do (the train had failed to call for a booked stop so it was clearly 'ONE's fault - the TOC at the time). I then suggested that as we were clearly going to have to draw on their own resources, sould they please log the incident and I would in due course supply them with a bill for any costs incurred, which may or may not be receipted.

We then went back to the pub, and I persuaded the landlord to drive us crosscountry on the unmade tracks that lead to the pub, across to Great Yarmouth, for (I think) about £20. Return home was considerably later than booked....

I got my money back and a grovelling apology (and phone call) from ONE. Apparently the driver had failed to read the special notice that with effect from the previous week, that service was now booked to call at Berney Arms.

Now, who can top that....?
