I'll second the previous comment. Also on our 379s the emergency call button now has a clear flap over it which you must lift before you can even reach the button, aswell has been pointed out you must depress the button for a few seconds in order to prepare the railway group emergency call. This may be adopted elsewhere in future. Aswell as that the button does not pertrude from the unit and is surrounded all the way around by a shield along with the "Ugent Call" button. So it would be very difficult to accidently press it. The emergency stop plungers on the other hand...

GSM-R becomes operational in the West Country in the Spring (April / May) time and staff training starts 2 weeks today for NR staff. Not sure what is happening regards training for TOC staff and fitment of equipment to trains.

Anyone from FGW or DB Schenker know?

Heard that the 150/1s are being fitted with GSM-R at St Phillips Marsh following refurbishment. I presume the rest of the West DMU fleet will being fitted there, not sure when though. There was talk of the HST powercar fitment a while ago, not sure if it has started yet though.

Explains why Radio Survey Coach 3 has been awfully busy down there.

Used to leave control in forward and DSD alarm sounding while walking down train to check engines (Voyagers).

Local Bombardier staff member pointed out new system and made us aware we could no longer do this, so much for communication :D

All class 66s and 60s (even some of those currently in store) are being fitted with the GSM-R equipment, although most have not got the radio heads fitted yet. 66168 has GSM-R that is live...

66168 at Immingham at the mo.

Saw 150126 today, it has the mounting fitted for the GSM-R equipment but not the radio itself yet.

In the cab with the paper
GSM-R forms part of ERTMS, so it needs to be done.

Mind you, using it merely for cab-to-shore communication barely scratches the surface of it's potential. However, even in that capacity it is a vast improvement over CSR and, presumably, NRN as well. It's just causing some headaches for certain drivers because it incorporates some of the features of CSR that are necessary for DOO operation, such as a DSD alarm, which are not familiar to those drivers who have never used CSR in the past. ;)

Hi all, I'm on the Network Rail GSM-r installation team.

First of all there is a difference between the signallers response to the REC button (Railway Emergency Call) and the DSD alarm.

Pressing the REC button will set off an Emergency call to all drivers in the area (3 cells as mentioned previously) to stop immediately.
There are obvious implications to this, ie a cleaner on a depot might accidently press the button while cleaning the head.
Scotrail have been trialling the system for approx. 3 years now and due to a number of spurious REC button calls they have asked for a trial of a flap to cover the button, or a shroud with a deeper surround printed with 'Emergency Call Only' on it.
These have just been completed around the country and the feedback from drivers is being analysed.

The DSD alarm does not set off an immediate alarm, but sends an alarm to the signaller's console. The oficial wording is;
The GSM-R radio has an alarm function linked to the Driver’s Safety Device (DSD) which will alert the Signaller should the driver become incapacitated. The Signaller receives a DSD Alarm as a high priority call which sets off a distinctive alarm on the GSM-R terminal. The Signaller is required to respond with an Urgent priority call back to the cab to ascertain that the Driver is ok or needs assistance. If no response is forthcoming, the Signaller may need
to summon assistance to visit the cab and check that the driver is fit to continue.

If you are doing maintenance on the units where you usually leave the original DSD alarm sounding, wait 30 seconds until the GSM-R control panel says 'preparing DSD alarm, press X to cancel'.
If you cancel it by pressing X at this point, the DSD alrm will not go off again, and you can do your maintenance as usual.
Some depots are changing the VMI's to reflect this, some depots are instructing the maintainers to isolate the GSM-r before carrying out the checks.

Most (all?) the driver's I've come into contact with the system so far have been very positive about it. If you have any queries or concerns I'll try and answer them, or I will find out.

I am getting used to GSM-R. Was good after setting up the other day to get a 'call signaller' msg from the box. Great that i couldnt hear him as he had messed it up & pressed the wrong button. Made me feel not quite so useless & after we had a laugh about it, it gave me more confidence.

It really is an excellent system, really missing having it here and can't wait for it to go live. All we have currently is the cabling coming out the panel:(

That is what it is all about, learning. Just don't mistake the red button for something else!

Definately worth a look if you are interested in the system.

Interesting comments in their forum regarding activation of alarms, most while under maintenance.

Not surprised as very little information passed on to techs working on sets.

Thanks for the link

You should be getting training cascaded down to you soon.

Treat the REC button as live at all times.

The GSM-R headset only lights up when that cab is active.
In a non-active cab, although the light on the Driver's Control Panel is off the headset is still active.

If you are not sure trip the circuit breaker.

There should be posters up around the depots by now.

I've been told by an FGW driver today that around half the 150's are fitted, no 153's yet but he didn't know about any other unit types and had not yet been trained on it.

I've seen the odd DBS 66 fitted as well.

The first FGW 153 was fitted and tested this week, 158's are all done, HST's are in progress.

EMT completed fitting all fleets last week, apart from a few 156's that are going through the C6 at Neville Hill.

Cross Country have fitted all their 170's to ready stage and are now fitting radios for going live.

London Midland have started fitting 153's and 150's, and will soon start on 170's at Tyseley.

NXEA/Greater Anglia fitting 153's along with a refurb at Wolverton, saw my first re-branded Greater Anglia vehicle last week, a fairly boring plain white.

East Coast have started trialling the version 2 software last week. EMT are to follow this month.

Chiltern doing trial runs at the moment ready for going live.

Busy busy
