For starting a unit from cold, details might be different but on the whole it's going to be the same. The only thing I'm not certain if it a modern DMU would be started initially from the local controls, but I've got a feeling they might.
This is a very interesting bit of film. I've got it on DVD and it actually came in very handy when I became involved with working on and driving some old buses which have the same gearbox. The proceedures for operating and dealing with faults on the gearbox are exactly the same.

Interesting the bit later about using both tones on the two tone horn to avoid confusion with the sound of car horns. Food for thought considering using one tone is common now in most circumstances, and the issue of crossing fatalities that has been big news recently.

There's another interesting film about coupling two units together. Every passenger should watch those films so they can realize there is much more to being a driver than sitting in a cab pushing buttons.

That is the way I was taught to start engines when preparing a DMU. It meant we could check the oil level in the sight glasses before starting the engine.

Jeez, after watching that video, did any dmu-operated trains run on time in those days??? lol What a rigmarole!

Train preparation times are taken into account when booking crews on to prepare a train so it can depart on time.
