  • Wait until the people who decided to call it the 'Routeing [sic] Guide' realise that they've added an extra 'e' to the word 'routing' for no reason...
    hexagon789
    hexagon789
Why is the extra 'e' wrong?

'Routeing' is the present participle of route in UK English.

(picture shows the text "Uh oh, that password doesn't match that account. Please try again."

For gods sake BBC, why does your "wrong password" message have to be so awful? I don't need my typo reinforced with onomatopoeia, and as for telling me to "try again", that's just patronising. What on earth else am I going to do?
"This password is incorrect" is ample, thanks.

As @TT-ONR-NRN points out - there’s far worse websites for this… at least BBC makes an effort to seem friendly.

It's a fairly common thing now, this "humanising" of errors. Certainly Microsoft extensively re-wrote their interface style guide along these lines a few years ago, and Apple have been at it for ages.

The fine line lies, of course, in avoiding condescension.

Could be worse.. "Go away, hacker!" assuming that all wrong password attempts are attempts at exploiting the site.
OK so I found this video made by the transport authority in Vienna entitled "Sliding on escalators can be deadly"
    I don't know why, but I think it's hilarious

Reading an alphabetically organised list of stations becomes incredibly unsatisfying down the middle, because you get a list of all the london terminals irritatingly interrupted by the two London Roads.

Not to mention that London station which isn't a London Terminal - London Fields.
Does anyone happen to know what is the meaning of a bright blue sign showing "GSM-R" with a 3 large digits underneath is?

I spotted a few at Gloucester. I'd upload an image but I can't figure out how to do one in a profile post

They are a GSM-R registration code. The symbol you see next to the wording is the same as the symbol the GSM-R keypad for registration.

Generally speaking, the code is the last 3 digits of the signal number, with 0s added in if the signal has a short number (Say M23 for example, in which case the code would be 023).
    CC 72100
    CC 72100
They are meant to be where signal plates can't be viewed very clearly from where the cab would be, but they seem to be everywhere, including where there is no problem with reading the number on the signal plate.
Thank you very much to the fantastic member of staff in my local ticket office this morning who patiently went through and booked me reservations on several trains for a journey I want to make shortly - despite them not being the ones that appear in the journey planners for that journey, and despite me not explaining what I wanted very clearly!
The forum is certainly getting a good bit of extra traffic from this 80x withdrawal saga...

Probably not worth a full thread for this so I'll ask here: am I correct that on Bank Holidays off-peak tickets are valid all day, like Saturdays and Sundays?

Usually but it depends on the specific ticket. Some tickets do have restrictions that apply on Saturday and Sunday.
If you're ever looking for something relaxing to listen to, try the sound of a 323... :)

I like it! but not too much. It really does sound like a metro train though, but I can’t pinpoint which one!

”Relax” and ”Class 323 sounds” are two of the things I would least associate with one another. :!:

Sounds a bit like a higher-pitched sound of the London Underground 1996 stock, A BIT.
Just a random curiosity that occurred to me.

Are there any National Rail, London Underground, or light rail stations anywhere in the UK that have never seen a mention on this forum in the many years of its existence?
    py_megapixel
    py_megapixel
This would obviously have to exclude threads which involve intentionally stating lots of station names - which precludes most of the Quizzes & Games section, as well as Trivia threads asking for lists of stations. I'd probably also exclude stations that closed before the forum existed.
    Radley
    Radley
    Such an interesting question.

While this is not one of them, Colliers Wood appears to be mentioned very little with 4 pages of forums where said station has been mentioned.

If I find anything different (trying to exclude trivia forums!) I’ll update!

Part of me thinks although, that every station has been said in some capacity. Would be amazed to figure out any anomalies!

I have seen Withington has 10 pages of mentions, however 70% are on the quizzes and games subforum, so I think that is a considerably small amount.

I assume you mean the BVE route I was taking about in the post below?
I can't remember exactly, and I have a few dozen routes installed so can't really go through them all and check, but I do know it was Northern, and I think it was from a set by 'eezypeazy', either the ECML one or the Tyne Valley.
(As you can likely tell, I don't drive trains for a living - if I did, I'd have far better route-knowledge than that :D)

    adsim
    ok thanks for the reply.
Just been playing BVE (which is a driving simulator) and there's a yellow sign with a black letter 'T' on it on a post next to the track. Doesn't seem worth starting a whole new thread for but does anyone know what this means?
Just wondering - have GWR or FGW ever run Pacers coupled in multiple with their 150s, 153s or 158s?

150s definitely, seen a few combos down Dawlish way; 153s seems quite feasible; 158s I've no idea, maybe as ECS?

Yes, yes and yes. I've seen all three combinations.
If anyone knows what the prominent sort of screechy-sounding instrument in most - if not all - versions of the theme to "Doctor Who" is, I'd like to know... I just can't place it!
    Peter C
    Peter C
There was a show I watched on TV which mentioned this at some point - I think it was a case of the relevant BBC department going away and making the theme from countless different things. The suggestion of the theremin seems to be the best answer. (The theremin being one of few instruments you can share in the current climate as you don't touch it! :))

@XAM2175 probably that then, it was in a documentary about the programme some years ago that mentioned it

It could possibly not be a real instrument at all, most of the music and sound affexts were created by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
Some proof-reading and sanity checks would not go amiss on the National Rail website (example below:)

I had the same issue on the TV advertising thread. 'Submit' didn't work in Chrome, but seemed fine in Safari.

@nlogax Adblockers will detect the word "advertising" and assume things below it are an ad, which interferes with the submit functionality. Do you perhaps have an adblocker installed in Chrome, but not Safari?

@Xenophon PCDGS Yes, I managed to figure out why as you can see above
