  • Ahh ol' Dougey he's not that bad tbh, his notes are some of the best i've had once i sat down and worked through it all, becareful with that exam though as he did through in a few curve balls. Ahh sounds propa interesting, like you say i'm sure it will also benefit ya in the long run. Yeah they're pretty big, work for national rail and maintain alot of the east coast apparantly. They also work in Scotland aswell like, if i ever got on a grad scheme with them or say TFL or Babcock i would be over the moon.
Im sure it doesnt but it sounds more interesting than just sat listening to doug stewart talk for hours on end a week. It seems similar our 2nd semester is just mainly IDP and thats what i got told by my tutor.
Ah fair enough, doesn't sound pleasant.
Well yeah, it looks good on the CV free booze plus it is quite nice working along side steam trains somthing different. Quite a gentle introduction to working on site too, they are teaching me how to be in charge of the sites we work on and stuff which is a very valuable experience at this age.
That is very interesting about psychometric tests... i wonder why that is.... not complaining though.

I know network rail have loads of tests like that, which im not looking forward to so maybe it might help me a bit.
You mentioned guest speakers from balfour beatty do they do a lot in rail?
I’m sure you can get through to an interview alot easier aswell due to been dyslexic, as I know a lad who’s in 4th year doing mech eng. and he’s getting interviews all over without having to do psychometric tests, which are a pain.
Yeah , the one in third year is 20 creds, and the one in forth is 45 creds, alot of pages...
Well unfortunately it doesn’t get any easier after them exams, as you’ll have a design project worth 20 creds on designing a structure, one out of steel and the other out of reinforced concrete, it does learn you a hell of a lot though, and stuff starts to click that you learnt earlier on in the year. Don’t quote me on that though as it may have changed as I did my 2nd year 2 years ago as I should really be in my 4th now but due to some medical reasons (my lung decided to collapse ha) i’m now redoing my 3rd year.
I’m sure you could probably do one for both 3rd and 4th year, if you think of a title and it’s feasible they’re usually pretty sound. Ahh nice i’ve been on a few when I was very young for my birthday but not recently, you doing that though would look great on an application form for say a rail company though, but more importantly the free booze sounds grand!
Deep insight is something i am really looking for, ( i dont know if you have ever been to a steam railway or heard of them) but i volunteer as one of the maintenance staff at the Keighley and Worth Valley railway, with a lot of engineers there im getting some insight from them. Also gives me some practical experience, which is always useful. And they buy my beer....

Wasnt aware we do dissertations in 3rd and 4th year i thought it was just 4th year. Is the 3rd year dissertation shorter or same length?

P.S had to put it in two parts due to length....
Yes it is some friends have 6 as they have got some optional modules this semester both mine are next semester.
Well very glad to hear it, and i agree with you on the job market, it certainly makes this career look promising, despite the cuts there is still investment in the rail sector. I may know a lot but would like to focus it down to engineering so it might not be too broad we will see in a years time i am sure ill enjoy it anyway. I think i'd most likely do one on rail in 3rd and 4th year, i am dyslexic so writing about something i know more than average about will probably help quite a bit.
Ahh 5, lucky you I’m sure they're making that course easier :P
Ahh really well I’m finding it pretty damn interesting, but then again this is the first time I’ve really looked into trains, but just from this module and the state of the job market I think it's somet to go into as they're plenty of jobs going thankfully. Would still say the module may be a bit broad for you if you know a lot about them already but they do get in alot of guest engineers from balfour beatty etc, which does give you a deep insight. From what I know Chris Moodley does it, but as i said its many guest speakers differing each week. Also if you are propa into trains, dissertations can be done in 3rd and 4th year on them, as i’m looking at doing one for my fourth on high speed rail, not sure exactly what on yet though!
Yep although i only have 5 exams :) so im only stressed not to very stressed yet.
Well that module is one of the reasons i came to leeds as only leeds and nottingham do that module. I was worried after being interested in railways for a long time that it might be a bit of a let down but im glad you say it isn't. Which lecturer teaches it?
Hey, i cant send you a personal message yet as you haven't made enough posts but just thought i would mention i am a second year doing same course as you. What year are you 3rd or 4th?

    James
