Charing Cross - why so small?

I used Charing Cross to commute to a lot as a lad, plus for leisure purposes. I always liked the station then, now its gone all subterranean over the platforms with is unpleasant. I used to enjoy hearing the the Hastings thumper fire up.

    What train encapulates your childhood?

As I'm not very good on actually train types, but someone here will know exactly what I mean, the slam door EMUs of South East London / Kent. The most exciting was a trip to Margate, Broadstairs or Ramsgate during the school summer holidays when you could go direct from Dartford. We came from...

What were the 5 most controversial closures of the 60s?

Southport to Preston via Crossens seemed a poor decision. The electric section to Crossens was particularly busy , carrying more than 2 million a year in the early 60s.

    Memories of Broad Street

Thanks.....yes brings back memories. I do miss these oddities to the general rail network going, its what makes it interesting. My first trip from Broad Street in the early 80s was during the weekend, think I was about the only passenger to board.

    Memories of Broad Street

I used this station a few times when I was in my teens. I remember the first time I arrived into the main station concourse and being so shocked to see how run-down is was. Did 455s ever make it to Blackfriars or Holborn?

That photo took me back, I occasionally used HV on services from Bexleyheath. Did Holborn Viaduct have more platforms at one time ? There looks a gap as to where there may have been another one.

Virgin Trains proposed Virgin Value Class

Normally I think it would have been viable, as Avanti only have 1 per hour, although they plan to up it to 2 per hour, and to serve South Parkway themselves, so that would have seen Virgin off.

Virgin Trains proposed Virgin Value Class

Virgin did propose to launch a competing service to Avanti between Liverpool and London, I think the stopping pattern was a bit different, like Liverpool South Parkway was proposed. The fares were meant to be very competitive too. Not heard anymore.

    BR Hospitality DMU

Wasn't these types of DMUs operating from Aylesbury a few years ago on a peak hour shuttle to High Wycombe. I would have loved to have gone on it.
