    The North Lincolnshire Rail Netiwork

It's mainly the inaccuracy of the track and signalling layouts and the failure to observe the basic principles of the time that troubles me the most - facing connections into sidings which would almost certainly have been accessed only by a trailing move, signals plonked seemingly randomly in...

    The North Lincolnshire Rail Netiwork

Nice scenery in the videos, but I'm afraid that the representation of the infrastructure, most of all the track layouts and the signalling, really didn't do it for me.

    Signalling simulations

Of course, in reality, the signalman should be able to see the whole area under his control at once if he so chooses - the number of monitors vs the number of overview screens should always allow this. In Simsig, on the other hand, there's no way (is there?) of spreading a paged sim over more...

Games where you run a company?

World of Subways (the London one at least) looks good, but the level of operational realism is terrible.

    World of subways London Underground

I was impressed for about three seconds, then I noticed that all three platform starter signals at Hammersmith were 'off' at the same time. As soon as one train departed, they all dropped back to Danger. Nowhere near correct behaviour! The braking seemed a long way off too. The first step on...

    South-West and South-East Maps

Excellent work! As a suggestion for a future effort, how about an 'enlarged' map of London that'd the complexities of the rail network (NR and LUL!) to be represented in more detail?

    Level Crossings

Selecting 'LOWER' or 'LWR' will start the crossing sequence and lower the barriers; when the sequence has completed and the word 'CLEAR' appears, selecting 'CLEAR' or 'CLR' will prove the crossing clear in the interlocking and allow the protecting signal to clear (the route across the crossing...

    Trent RELEASED + New Sheffield

That seems to summarise it pretty well! All that I can add to Metroland's post is to suggest having a look at the Cambridge sim (I think it's still in the beta stage, so is available through the forums rather than the main download page) - there's a pre-programmed 'scenario' where SLW is indeed...

    Trent RELEASED + New Sheffield

Sorry for the confusion chaps - I've just re-read my post too, and I did of course intend to suggest that TORR be turned on to make it easier, but must have been standing on my head at the time. Turning it off does, as Flyboy quite rightly suggests, reflect reality and greatly increases the...

    Trent RELEASED + New Sheffield

Tip of the day - turn TORR (train operated route release) off when starting the sim. It's a feature of the real panel (so every route has to be cancelled after the passage of a train), but also becomes a bit of a pain after about two minutes...!

    Class 155 for BVE4 Released!

Hi Bill, Surely the signalling isn't designed to be telling the driver that he's supposed to stop beyond a signal to change ends and head back t'other way? All the signal - be it the main aspect or the sub 'off' - tells the driver is that the route's set to a certain point. It doesn't...

    Class 155 for BVE4 Released!

Bill, Just an alternative to your (entirely valid) suggestion, though I can't remember the exact details of the signalling layout in the area in question (and can't run BVE to find out!). I assume that the 'running shunt' signal was 'on' when you encounter it after passing a single yellow...

    Simsig problems

That's how I interpreted it too - however, you don't know whether they're 'safe' or not...if you've not got detection in the required position, you need to assume that they're not safe to pass traffic over until you know otherwise!

    Simsig problems

'Flashing points' indicate that the points are 'out of correspondence' or 'wrong' - i.e. they've not detected normal/reverse. They could well be safe to pass over - if, say, there's been a failure of the detection equipment. On the other hand, you might have an obstruction stopping the switch...

Harcroft to Colliers Stone [v2] Released!

Well I've put my signalman's hat on and had a drive - it's a nice extension to an already nice route! There's a few niggly things that, to be honest, really made me cringe though (as I said - this was with my signalman's hat on!). I hope you don't mind me listing them here, along with a few...

    Edinburgh - Aberdeen

Cheers, I'll take you up on that offer tomorrow - it's a part of the world that I don't know very much about (at all!), so it'd be good to hopefully learn a thing or two. Meanwhile though...I was planning on going to bed about an hour ago before I got the idea of drawing diagrams and things ;)

    Edinburgh - Aberdeen

I've decided to upload this diagram now, or I'll not be able to sleep tonight ;) For those who haven't got the full picture yet, imagine the three boxes at A, B and C. The box at B might have very little purpose other than to break up what would otherwise be a long section between A and C (with...

    Edinburgh - Aberdeen

Methinks there's some confusion arising here - are you sure that you're not describing Carmont as a pair of IB signals (controlled from the box in rear!) when it should really be described as a proper block post with an operational signalbox? I've got some diagrams that I can upload tomorrow...
  19. T

    Edinburgh - Aberdeen

I think that's where my confusion arises Bill - does Carmont have an IB section itself, or is it merely a box with a couple of signals in each direction to break up an otherwise lengthy section?
  20. T

    Edinburgh - Aberdeen

Bill, Just to (hopefully) expand on one or two of the points that you made... Intermediate block sections are a concept that applies only to absolute block sections - you're absolutely right to say that they're used to break up what would otherwise be a lengthy section, but if the section...
