How far West did a SWT 170 get?

I have been wondering this question as I only ever saw them going as far as Gillingham, but usually only Salisbury. I did find some photos on google of some at EXD, but did one ever make it to Bristol or Paignton/Plymouth/Penzance?

    Transport for Wales 769's

Thanks for the information. I missed those unfortunately but there was due to be another one leaving Canton at 1255 which was cancelled so didn’t see it unfortunately.

Any 769 action planned today in the Valleys?

Porterbrook Cl.769 'Flex' trains from 319s, initially for Northern

Looks like the project has gone too far to just scrap it all now.

Is a uniform fleet cheaper to operate than a mixed fleet?

Some really informative answers here! Thank you for all your detailed responses.

Is a uniform fleet cheaper to operate than a mixed fleet?

Operationally I would agree is easier but is it cheape?

Is a uniform fleet cheaper to operate than a mixed fleet?

I understand that with a uniform fleet, it is cheaper to train crew initially, but are operational costs cheaper to have just one class of unit in a fleet? And if so in what ways is this cheaper, in ongoing costs, other than initial and staffing costs?

Keolis Amey Wales - Future Rolling Stock

What sort of ratio of electrification to non-electrified line or minimum mileage are we looking at to make bi-modes worth using?

So at best it’s 3tph. Most of the day is 1tph. Swanline is 1tp2h. Manchester-Carmarthen/Milford Haven is doing to be DMUs unfortunately so no luck there. Overall, it’s probably not worth electrifying at this current time. I would certainly prioritise Chiltern and Snow hill lines first.

True, would have to weigh it up whether it’s worth it for the sake of 30-40 miles of electric track.

Keolis Amey Wales - Future Rolling Stock

I think a rolling programme would be the best thing to happen. Then you can use one lot of equipment/labour etc. and just do each bit at a time working your way around the network. However like I have stated before, I don’t see it being very efficient electrifying to Swansea for only 1 tph. IMO...

Porterbrook Cl.769 'Flex' trains from 319s, initially for Northern

Assuming the 769 project is eventually successful, are there any more lines they could be introduced on to make use of more electrified lines? I was thinking for Thames Valley branches as well as North Downs line and Didcot-Oxford, cascading 165s to Exeter subject to route clearance as I think...

Keolis Amey Wales - Future Rolling Stock

Personally I think all new stock should be electric, bi-mode or tri-mode, no more new diesel-only stock.

Not sure but it would make sense to have pantographs as there are many sections of electrified track across the network. Would it be cheaper to build them with pantographs than to add them later? I remember converting the Voyagers was considered too expensive.

Are the new 231 DEMUs going to be bi-mode or have the capability of having a pantograph fitted? Some pictures sugest they will But nothing seems to confirm either way. I’m assuming they will be only diesel powered.

Confirmation of rolling stock changes at Southeastern, including 707s

According to Wikipedia they are due to be replaced by 701s so not sure where they will be headed next.

Confirmation of rolling stock changes at Southeastern, including 707s

I wasn’t aware of that but it seems a lot of 3rd rail EMUs have the capability for a pantograph to be fitted, if they don’t have one already.

Not many TOCs 3rd rail EMUs can go to! Unless they convert to battery/overhead.
