    Deepcar steel train

It stopped for a couple of weeks a few months back while the steel works staff were furloughed due to business uncertainty and I think some maintenance and track re-laying was carried out during this time. The staff are all now back at work to my knowledge. I believe the works is on its current...

    What were locomotive 'trip workings?'

Excellent recollections. Do we know if crews liked doing trip workings? Or were they seen as more monotonous? I know coal trip workings in the West Riding came with some sort of bonus per loaded wagon moved, which could have attracted some to the work, as well as causing some hurried driving.

    What were locomotive 'trip workings?'

Yes, that does seem a rather sensible strategy. Thanks for your help. Thank you very much for the information!

    What were locomotive 'trip workings?'

Excellent, thanks for the information. So is this why they often seemed to feature unusual traction, it was often just whatever way knocking around spare for the day?

    What were locomotive 'trip workings?'

Often, when you see a picture of an old locomotive/train in BR days it is referred to as being on a 'trip working,' however, rarely is it explained what these are. Can anyone please explain what these workings were and how they are different from any other form of locomotive working? What other...

Most pleasant place to wait for a train

I like Garsdale, Crianlarich, Loch Eil Outward Bound, St Erth and Kyle of Localsh. Plus stations with good pubs; Sheffield, Dewsbury, Cleethorpes, Huddersfield etc... Or a nice First Class Lounge: Euston, Kings Cross, Inverness (sleeper), Cardiff, Paddington etc. I've always enjoyed Lancaster...

'The Here, There and Everywhere Trains- Yet Again!' -Pathfinder Tours 30-31/7

Argh. That’s a bit annoying as I’d booked to do the overnight leg and then continue covering track in the area from Bristol Parkway the next day. I will have to see what I can salvage from the situation. On the bright side; hopefully the originally planned itinerary can be delivered on the new...

Most Intimidating Place To Wait For a Train

Totally agree with the Paris Metro; it has a menacing, frenzied atmosphere and you really have to keep your wits about you at all times- even more so than Naples.

    Lapford station in N gauge.

I'm very much enjoying that recreation, great work! :) 1627232572 Haha, I did get it working back when I had a pair of green class 20's but even though they were mechanically the same they didn't run well together so I got rid of one of them and now just keep the other to run singly. So yeah...

'The Here, There and Everywhere Trains- Yet Again!' -Pathfinder Tours 30-31/7

Heating is a lot less important on those sections though. I always prepare to be flexible regarding temperature. I remember one tour; The Diamond Twenties where temperatures started around freezing in the Birmingham area in the morning, then it was 25 and sunny during the day in the London and...

    Caledonian Sleeper

Is there a carriage conveying seated passengers on the Fort William portion? Showing sold out on the website in October; or is this a Covid measure? Is it due to end anytime soon? Looking to do Preston-Corrour on the sleeper to do a hike over to Dalwhinnie station, so just doing some advanced...

    Your favourite road trips?

That's a pretty good trio! South Africa sounds amazing! 1627114797 That sounds interesting! While posting my original post, I forgot that I drove Dublin-Bundoran (North West coast of Republic of Ireland) and that was a nice trip. I found driving over there very civilised. It was interesting...
