Trivia: stations that were always too big for their traffic

And I would add that if the bays at Carlisle weren't in use for those terminators, it would add considerable work to the three through platforms, in terms of boarding / alighting passengers then shifting units to sidings waiting for their next service. I think the layout of Carlisle is just...

Trivia: Which major town has the least direct route from London?

True. Northallerton is actually the County Town, if that's the correct term, rather than York for North Yorkshire. I suppose I've just assumed that when I've travelled on TPE from Middlesbrough to Thirsk, York or Manchester we often wait just before joining the ECML for trains that are actually...

    Buying second hand iPad

Personally, I would recommend just resetting the device to factory settings. Although, in my view, buying from somewhere such as Facebook Marketplace is pretty much akin to buying from a car boot sale. I would much rather buy from a shop such as CEX, at least if something goes wrong like it...

Trivia: Which major town has the least direct route from London?

Just to clarify, most if not all trains that stop at Stockton nowadays go through to Middlesbrough and not Darlington, so a change at Middlesbrough or Thornaby first then at Darlington if you use Northern. If you use TransPennine Express then York is probably the next place to change. I don't...

Had that as the wallpaper for the lock screen on my iPad.

How essential to life is a smart phone in the 21st century?

I agree with the above - not totally essential but very useful apps and features. I've just upgraded. Had an iPhone 5s for years and didn't feel the need to have the latest Apple models mainly because of the lack of a 3.5mm jack for headphones. Now have a Google Pixel 3a so again ot the latest...

Is learning to drive an HGV harder than learning to drive a train ?

I think the hardest skill to learn in driving HGV Class 1 artics would be reversing. Having to turn the steering wheel the opposite way to the way you want to go at the start of the maneouvre must seem so very counter-intuitive at first.

AIUI, an m-ticket can only be used / viewed onthe app, an e-ticket can be printed off / viewed as a pdf / possibly a couple more options. EDIT: @kc_ beat me to it while i was typing, and explained it better than I did too.

Do Heritage Operators offer Delay Repay?

Following on from this post in the Standees on heritage railways thread make me wonder if any of the heritage operaters offer Delay Repay for late running services or would a claim for money back be dealt with on a sort ofgoodwill basis?

(Speculation) - Northern planning to introduce seat reservations?

I've just been on the Northern website, mainly to check if trains are running to time locally due to Storm Ciara, and one of the steps in purchasing a ticket is choosing seats. Seat reservations aren't available for the journey I want to make (not that it matters - only going 3 stations down the...

Trivia: Place names that you're not sure how to pronounce

If I remeber the episode in Only Fools And Horses correctly, uncle Albert calls Streatham 'Saint Reathams' and it takes Del a few seconds to work out where he means.

Trivia: Place names that you're not sure how to pronounce

I would say these are correct. In one of Michael Portillo's Train Journey programmes where he visits, he pronounces it in the way quoted (I imagine that the pronnunciation wold have been researched?).

    Carlisle July trip

In the city centre, there's the cathedral, a castle (can't remember offhand if it's National Trust or English Heritage ran), Tullie House (https://www.tulliehouse.co.uk/) although I've never been in there, the railway model shop (https://candmmodels.co.uk/). I've used the chippy that's opposite...
