ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

Was wondering if there might be some suitable spots where 110 could be considered, anything further likely to be an overambitious thought. I'm not up to date with the coverage of the latest signalling, or what is installed from scratch when moving to the centralised control centres or what is...

ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

There are probably significant wider issues which may have been covered earlier. But on the face of it the 100mph limitation does look like a missed opportunity to have some scope for recovery in places (given necessary attention to track etc, which wouldn't have been economical for just a...

Govenment Briefing 23rd May - Reversing Beeching Cuts

Yes a big assumption. But if something is done in the medium term which doesn't fit in with aspirations for electrification and suit future capacity issues, at such time as electrification might be considered any reworking that's then needed here could knock it on the head. But we don't want it...

ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

That sounds as if it would make planning easier. Can someone refresh my memory? I had it in mind from somewhere that services between Inverness and Aberdeen would be 2+4 sets to suit platform lengths. What's the capacity of the new station at Kintore? Perhaps I'm wrong. But this is a long thread...

    Stations to avoid and why

I'd forgotten that one. Makes Elton & Orston seem hectic .......

ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

Absolutely. Apologies if the comment could have been interpreted as "putting the cart before the horse". There will be plenty of serious issues to think about for quite some time ahead of what is primarily curiosity.

ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

Thanks for that info. I'd just lost track of the number of refurbs there are now. Does anyone know the extent to which progress is possible in the current situation? I like to hope there could be a few more by summer and that it will be possible for normality to be mostly restored. Each delivery...

ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

It's always sad to hear of another railway factory in Britain about to close. But in the context of this thread: Am I being simplistic in wondering whether, if there was some duplication in tooling and / or training specific to the refurbishment work which gave rise to the difference in quality...

    May 2020 timetable changes

Thanks That's about what I'd anticipated. Had done a timetable enquiry for 25th May on the LNER website this morning and got a "We haven't finalised our timetables" message. Nothing urgent, I can have another look in a week or two.

    May 2020 timetable changes

Much of interest on this thread. Was wondering. Are there "target dates" for the changes to be finalised / published / tickets made available, ahead of 18th May? Presume we should soon be getting beyond the stage of this being work in progress, and just leaving scope for any fine tuning?

ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

But how long should it take to get the hang of something that ought to be straightforward, and which you might expect to be part of the basic training before staff are allowed to take this stock out on the line??

    LNER HST Withdrawals

For anyone on the "Highland Chieftain" Leg of the LNER Farewell Tour this afternoon, here you are passing Cradlehall earlier. Seemed so strange to think that this is it after so many years. Hearing the HST "Chieftain" heading up the hill just before 0800 was always a useful timecheck.

    LNER HST Withdrawals

Thanks. I'm more familiar with the ScotRail refurbishments and what a protracted situation that is, so was curious as to what EMR would be using.

    LNER HST Withdrawals

It does seem a pity that it won't be migrating somewhere. I know this could be controversial. But, would it be the end of the world if (after the celebration tours have been done), the doors were to be painted the same grey as the bodyside stripe to allow continued use? That would be a subtle...

    LNER Azuma (Class 800/801)

The first "in service" Azuma arrived in Inverness on the Highland Chieftain this evening. Apparently the official launch is before the departure tomorrow morning.

    LNER Azuma (Class 800/801)

Also, in Coach L (at the rear) a disconcerting clunking below decks when taking fast left hand curves. Hopefully not a permanent feature. Has anyone else noticed this?

    LNER Azuma (Class 800/801)

On the first Azuma "Chieftain" to Inverness, from Newcastle. Noticed the smooth change to diesel at Bridge of Allan, an unobtrusive hum underneath. Very brisk under the wires and I was interested to see how well they go on diesel. Mobile phone indications, so no assurance on accuracy. Passed...

    LNER HST Withdrawals

Just passed Morpeth on a good run from Dundee to Newcastle on 1E15 with 43307 leading. Unfortunately Coach E out of use with no power, and WiFi (according to announcement) issues affecting seat reservation displays. Hope these sort of issues won't just be accepted in the last week.

    LNER HST Withdrawals

Glad to see on RTT you weren't held too long. Was remembering being on the last Deltic service train out of Kings Cross on 31st Dec 1981 which was for York but terminated at Grantham (where I got off) because of congestion following a broken rail at Barkston. That was sad, but the derision...
