    Football

Today is the fiftieth anniversary of the day that Bradford were voted out of the Football League at its AGM at the Cafe Royal in London. I remember the day vividly. There was a sports programme on the wireless which ran from 12.00 to 12.30. When nothing had been said about re-election by...

Calling Workington AFC "Workington Town" is as big a faux pas as calling Bradford City "Bradford". Workington Town is a rugby league club. "Bradford" are in National League North.

TRIVIA: Places in the UK with a namesake (or similar sounding place name) in mainland Europe

Rotherham United play at New York Stadium, which is in New York.

Extended bridges which have seen very few trains

There are two former railway bridges in the Bradford area which were extended in the 1960's to allow roads to be built or widened. One is the bridge over Wakefield Road (A650) which used to carry the Bowling Jn - Laisterdyke (Bradford avoiding) line. This was once part of the Leeds, Bradford...

Trivia: Which major town has the least direct route from London?

Douglas doesn't count as the Isle of Man is not part of the UK (and the IOM was never in the EU). It is a self governing British Crown Dependency, like Jersey and Guernsey. Moreover the route from Douglas to London via ferry to Liverpool or Heysham, then rail to Euston, may be slow, but it is...

Trivia: Which major town has the least direct route from London?

Whitby to anywhere to its south is indirect. Connections at Middlesbrough (and by bus at Pickering) used to be awful but I haven't checked recently. The quickest way out is often a bus to Scarborough, Malton or York.

May I echo that. It was a horrible day for our friends and neighbours across the city and our thoughts are with them. RIP the 56. From a supporter of Bradford (Park Avenue) FC.

Is there a decent rail map that not only lists all of the stations but also lets you personalise it?

A good map for passenger lines but it doesn't show freight-only lines which hard-core gricers love to do on specialist railtours and then colour in.

Railway books you wish someone would write/publish

A comprehensive Baker-level track atlas to Africa so I can colour in the handful of lines I've done before I forget.

    Chester - Liverpool Merseyrail Services

Don't forget, electrification to Ellesmere Port was part funded by Ellesmere Port & Neston and Cheshire County councils before these were merged into a unitary authority. They did this so services to Ellesmere Port would be improved not worsened. 2 tph to Liverpool, 7 days a week including...

    Chester - Liverpool Merseyrail Services

What would be the point in spending lots of money reconfiguring a station to allow changes to services which will make rail travel less convenient for a lot of people? If there is money to spare, it would be better spent on providing extra platform capacity at Chester.

    Chester - Liverpool Merseyrail Services

When I was a passenger rep on the Ellesmere Port & Neston Public Transport Liaison Committee, I had to fight tooth and nail against barmpot plans to reduce the Hooton - Ellesmere Port service to a shuttle. Railfuture NorthWest even had a front page spread on its magazine proposing this. I...

    Trivia: Railway stations with thoroughfare

Little Sutton station has small signs saying "No public right of way". But its a moot point how this could ever be enforced as the station has been unstaffed since 1992. The footbridge is a useful short cut from a lot of housing to the south and bus stops, a couple of shops, a vets and a pub...

Best fish & chips near a station?

In Bradford you have to go a couple of miles out of the city to find a proper Yorkshire chip shop serving (skinless) haddock fried in beef dripping. Beautiful. My favourites are Highgate fisheries at Horton Bank Top (A647) and Salty's by the roundabout at the top of St Enoch's Road. There is...

Super trivial: Nearest shop you haven't been in

In my youth, for 21 years, I lived next door but six to a church which I never set foot in as I was of a different religious persuasion. But we did play in its grounds. I think it is now an outreach centre or something like that.

    Stations to avoid and why

If you are a lager drinker who complains that your beer might actually taste of something then Tap pubs are not for you. But don't worry, over 95% of pubs in the country do sell tasteless ice-cold lager whereas rather fewer pubs sell well-kept real ale.

TRIVIA: Places in the UK with a namesake (or similar sounding place name) in mainland Europe

Burscough and Brčko in Bosnia & Herzegovina. The pronunciation is almost identical. I went to Brčko, which is now on a freight-only line on a Railway Touring Company tour "Steam in the former Yugoslavia" a few years ago. It is on the south bank of the Sava river which forms the border with...

Is there a decent rail map that not only lists all of the stations but also lets you personalise it?

I would recommend Rail Atlas Great Britain and Ireland, 15th Edition Stuart Baker which will be released on April 30th. It is available on Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rail-Atlas-Great-Britain-Ireland/dp/0860936813 Baker is the holy bible for gricers like me who like colouring in the...

Unplanned station closures due to Coronavirus

I have noticed. Some other routes are bustituted like Wigan - Kirkby and Lancaster - Morecambe/Heysham. P.s. Why are you always having a dig at Ellesmere Port? You've been doing it for years.
