Reuse of Woodhead Catenary and Track

Thanks all - it would be interesting to know where equipment gets reused to - I'm warmed at the thought of ex main line track enjoying a quieter semi retirement in some rural Welsh idyll.

What is your earliest memory of travelling on a train?

Visiting aged relatives in Mexborough in the late 70s. Train from Huddersfield - remember seeing electric hauled goods going through Penistone hence my Woodhead interest. All our family holidays were by train also so remember coupled Calder Valley DMU's on Halifax-Blackpool services and loco...

Reuse of Woodhead Catenary and Track

Driving recently alongside the Blue Mountains Line here in Australia (electrified in the 1950s at 1500vdc) the sight of the rusting, original catenary transported me back to my family train journeys through Penistone in the late 70s and early 80s. I got around to wondering if any Woodhead...

Where is this old photo - West Yorkshire?

God this depresses me - I realise rationalisation had to happen but Halifax was decimated. What I've never understood is that the authorities waited until the service provision at Halifax was brought back up to a level where a 3 platform station would have been more use, before selling it off. I...

    Tunnel length visibility

Noticed on another one of the excellent Don Coffey videos earlier that when you enter Summit Tunnel, you can see the pinprick of light 1.6miles away at the other end. What is the longest tunnel length in the UK where you can see one end from the other?

    Northern launch Hull Halifax service

"Haligonian" I believe is the Canadian term. I never once heard it used in Yorkshire until someone added it to Wikipedia. That said, I don't know what the actual term is.

    Northern launch Hull Halifax service

I didn't realise it existed at all - it was always on my childhood fantasy routes that I sketched out to make Halifax the centre of the known universe.

    Northern launch Hull Halifax service

Back in my childhood days of inventing weird and wonderful train services, my favourite was a Hull - Holyhead boat train via Halifax.

    Northern launch Hull Halifax service

Great painting. Sowerby Bridge is another of those faded stations that probably deserves better.

Sydney Light Rail extension - first day

Rode L2 today from Haymarket to Circular Quay. Gave up at Wynyard, got off and walked.

    Most faded grandeur (trivia)

Penistone rates for me (and it was even more faded when the disused overheads were in place). Guide Bridge also. Aberystwyth. Down to 1 platform plus 1 Vale of Rheidol. Llandudno and Bridlington both have a case of the fadeds, although Llandudno has been improved. Blackpool South counts if you...

    Northern launch Hull Halifax service

I'm fascinated to learn of this train, and I'm delighted that Halifax is now a terminating destination. My assumption is that this is mostly about providing an extra Hull - Leeds service, but extending it west to avoid clogging up Leeds platforms. Halifax was chosen because it's a big enough...

Sydney Light Rail extension - first day

They are awful - I'm not going to complain about a bit of smoke when whole villages are being obliterated. As for the shot, thanks, a quick grab as I crossed the road.

Sydney Light Rail extension - first day

I took this shot early on Sunday morning. Shows the crossover and points between the L1 (I’m standing on it) and L2 at Haymarket/George Street. Also shows the sun fighting a losing battle against bushfire haze

Sydney Light Rail extension - first day

The first stage of Sydney’s light rail extension opened today, putting trams back onto the streets from which they were ejected 50 years ago. This is a view on George Street next to Bridge Street Station
