    EMR Class 170's

The /5s and /6s have that same aperture. Theres was for the Cambrian, as they went down there when new.

Most Interesting, Most Nostalgic, Most Boring, Most Hated

I share your views. Most Hated for me is travelling with Cross Country. The overcrowded and down at heel Voyagers, which seem to be getting tattier every time i go on one, and that dreadful reservation sytem. On a recent journey, i was moved 3 times, each time the seat wasnt reserved when i sat...

British Railway Passenger Network Map 1977

Ive just had a look at table 89 from 1968, and there are no trains from Tyldesley to Wigan. Most trains go to Newton Le Willows and beyond, with a couple going only as far as Leigh. There are a couple of dated trains going from Wigan North Western to Manchester Exchange. It doesnt make it clear...

British Railway Passenger Network Map 1977

The old Great Central line had been trucated at both ends on that map from the late 1960s, but where was the connection to get the dmus on the Arkwright Street to Rugby Central shuttles onto the now isolated route, and what depot provided them ?

Largest Station reduced to almost a 1 platform Halt

What a superb site that is. Thanks for posting that. Its amazing what a big place it was.

Largest Station reduced to almost a 1 platform Halt

That sounds really impressive. I caught a train from there a few years ago, but wouldve never realised. Would be interested to see a picture. I think the main feature of that station was a road flyover.

Question about Class 158 and Class 170

If i remember, the 159/0s werent very old when the extra hoppers were fitted. I thought it was a very good idea, as on a 158 on a very warm day with no air con, the 4 four hoppers fitted didnt really give a great air flow, the very reason i suppose that the 159/0s had theirs fitted.

Your experiences of unbelievable rolling stock diagram allocations (past and present)

They also turned up on the Cross City line when some 323s were temporarily withdrawn, i think about 2003. I travelled on and photographed 158783 at Chester Road.

Question about Class 158 and Class 170

All the fleet shouldve followed the 159/0s really, the extra vents are nost welcome i should think.

Question about Class 158 and Class 170

The class 159/0s had extra hopper windows added after a short tine in service. They are a slightly different design to the originals, its easy to pick them out from close up. Not sure about the later 159/1s

Question about Class 158 and Class 170

The Midland Mainline 3 car 170s, had a buffet counter too in the centre car. It was called "Mms Bar" if i remember correctly.

Largest Station reduced to almost a 1 platform Halt

Birmingham Snow Hill had 2 bay platforms open which were platforms 3 and 4 upon closure and a side platform, which was either 1 or 2. It was from this side platform that the very last train of all, a loco hauled train to New Street via Stourbridge Junction.

    1st gen DMUs and DEMUs

I liked the VEPs too. Having been brought up on 116s and 117s, i always liked having a door right by where i was sitting. You didnt have to queue to get on or off either, like with the low density stuff. I didnt find them terribly draughty either, just occasionally if the door seals needed...

Question about Class 158 and Class 170

The 170s seats are very comfortable i must admit. I still prefer 158 tho. At least if the loo on a 158 leaks, it doesnt spread all of its contents into the carpet in the seating area, like the 170s do.

Question about Class 158 and Class 170

That sounds about right. The London Midland ones mustve been done around the same time.

Question about Class 158 and Class 170

Internal doors were fitted to the 170/5 and 170/6, to the larger middle saloon in each car. I'm not sure if they were taken out before Central Trains ceased to exist, or whether it was after. I do remember tho, that the passengers caught on how to isolate them without using a key, so they would...

    Stations to avoid and why

Last time I got off a train there, notices were displayed on the wall advising that the station was a high crime area, and to take care, which didnt make the atmosphere any better. The booking office also went unstaffed at 1300 weekdays, which didnt help. I am going back a few years tho, and...
