    Season ticket refund

Given that TfL now process this all by phone, the current process for TfL-issued travelcards seems to be that the only option is to cancel the oyster card, simultaneously refunding the season ticket, any PAYG balance, and any deposit, and requiring the passenger to get a new oyster card if they...

    Season ticket refund

Is the refund calculation for a TfL-issued annual Travelcard (on Oyster) the same as the traditional NR season ticket refund calculation? So basically the difference between what I paid for the annual, and what I would have paid for an odd period - with the odd period caluclated on the usual NR...

Friend offered reduced train tickets -- Question

I get the impression that the old Conditions of Carriage were slightly confused as to whether they were trying to be a set of contractual terms or an explanation of the law of agency. If a employee of a company buys a ticket in the course of their duties, then I would have thought that it is...

Train announcements with a sense of humour

I recall a conductor on the ECML (many years ago - I forget which TOC it would have been) announcing the stations alliteratively, e.g. "We are now arriving at Delightful Doncaster". Similarly for Wonderful Wakefield, Lovely Leeds, etc...

Friend offered reduced train tickets -- Question

Agreed. In case it wasn't clear, I was just interested by the fact that there is no longer the blanket ban on ticket resale that there used to be. In the case at hand, I agree with the other posters here that there is likely to be something illegal going on and that anyone would be very ill...

Friend offered reduced train tickets -- Question

Did this change at some point recently, then? I had always understood, since many years ago, that tickets were technically non-transferable, even if in practice that was rarely, if ever, enforced. EDIT: To answer my own question, it seems it wasn't historically allowed. I found a copy of...

HS2: what signalling system is planned? also is the Handsacre connection no longer going ahead?

True. But there is absolutely no need for interoperability between Crossrail and trains in mainland Europe except "rules is rules". And, lacking a connection (or any plan for a connection) with HS1, there is no real reason for interoperability in HS2, either. ETCS will remain, not because it's...

HS2: what signalling system is planned? also is the Handsacre connection no longer going ahead?

And just to follow up - it's not just high speed lines - as I understood it, it's all new railways. Crossrail required a derogation to install Trainguard MT rather than ETCS level 3, with - theoretically - a commitment to resignal to ETCS level 3 when it becomes commercially available. I imagine...

HS2: what signalling system is planned? also is the Handsacre connection no longer going ahead?

Isn't that an EU requirement? So obviously, it was spec'd as ETCS, but I think they would have freedom to pick what they want now - i.e. if there was something else they preferred, I doubt they'd be any legal impediment. That said, I doubt the UK railway will change tack away from using ETCS...

Why are people opposed to HS2? (And other HS2 discussion)

Perhaps. But I also think the proponents of HS2 have done a very bad job of explaining its benefits

Why are people opposed to HS2? (And other HS2 discussion)

Not just relieving pressure on the WCML. The ECML, too, as not only will it serve Leeds, but it will become the main route to Edinburgh. And it serves Sheffield, so it relieves pressure on the MML. All of which will free up capacity for local services, which will be needed to enable the modal...

    Class 345 progress

So on the Heathrow branch will be 4tph soon? All to T4, or a mix of T4 and T5? (I presume 6tph to Heathrow isn't going to be feasible until the central section is open?)

    Yes, that's what I meant.

    LNER New Fares Trial

I thought that since the change from Saver Returns to Off Peak Returns, BoJ is allowed on both legs of an Off Peak Return, unless explicity restricted by the Restriction Code (which I think is relatively rare). So in most cases you can already break on the outward, no? EDIT: Granted, you may...

    LNER New Fares Trial

Agreed, in principle. But the reality is that increasingly people buy online, and the need to choose whether to buy a return or two singles significantly complicates the purchase process. So again, what seems to us to be a downside may actually benefit occasional travellers who are unfamilliar...

    LNER New Fares Trial

Agreed. Same day BoJ needs to be retained. As with other posters, I'd be strongly in favour of two-day ticket validity to facilitate overnight BoJ. But really, I think this trial supports the walk-up railway - something many of us worry may be under threat. If singles, open jaws, triangular...

    LNER New Fares Trial

FWIW the main reason I've used overnight BoJ is to construct affordable Home-to-A-to-B-to-Home triangular journeys when, for whatever reason, Advance tickets weren't suitable for my needs As such, it was at least partly a workaround for the lack of reasonably priced (Super) Off Peak Singles on...

    How fast are trains currently?

Do they routinely run at 140mph yet? I remember that when the services were first launched it was much discussed that normal service speed would be 125mph, with faster speeds only used for service recovery.

Forbidden from using power socket in station waiting room

I'm pretty sure that's not a major concern - any surface buildings will be wired no differently to a home or office. The station power supply will just be a normal power supply provided by the local electricity company, and will be completely separate from the railway electrification system.
