    Chisinau to Sofia (via Bucharest)

Sibiu is lovely as others have said. I recommend climbing the church tower while you're there - an interesting experience in and of itself, and a good way to get a view of the whole town. The YouTuber Steve Marsh visited Chişinǎu relatively recently. You might find his video interesting.

The Undiscovered Country: Mongolia (Ulaanbaatar and Darkhan)

Seconded - thank you for sharing this. I shall enjoy your video when I have some spare minutes. The firewood struck me too. If it is for the samovar, I wonder if that means the carriages have a faint whiff of wood smoke? Sadly no way of getting that from the video - I shall have to add a trip...

Why is my smartcard only activating some barriers?

Error 57 - which I believe suggests you’re right that the gate isn’t programmed to accept starting short on smartcard season tickets. I wonder if any forummers work in relevant roles at Southeastern? I’ll fire off an email to customer services, but imagine a missive from a customer asking for a...

Why is my smartcard only activating some barriers?

Ah ok, thank you. I never used to have this issue with my paper ticket, but if acceptance can be programmed differently for ticket types then that explains it. So my options are either: 1) Lobby Southeastern to reprogram the gates at Tunbridge Wells 2) Change my ticket destination from Frant...

Why is my smartcard only activating some barriers?

I hold an annual season ticket for journeys on the Southeastern network, valid from Staplehurst to Frant. I recently renewed my ticket while at Kings Cross station, which was issued on an LNER smartcard (until now I've held paper tickets). My smartcard will activate the barriers at Tonbridge...

LNER-run ticket offices - how do transactions post on bank statements?

A quick update for future searchers. I was able to buy my annual season ticket at Kings Cross ticket office, and the transaction is now showing up as 'LNE Railway' on my statement, so I'm anticipating the cashback. The first clerk I spoke to said it wasn't possible, but I went to a different...

LNER-run ticket offices - how do transactions post on bank statements?

That is exactly what I need, thank you Haywain.

LNER-run ticket offices - how do transactions post on bank statements?

Bit of a niche one this... Amex is currently offering a generous 10% cashback on all transactions I make with LNER, whether online or in-person. I'm keen to buy my annual season ticket in person from the ticket office at Kings Cross, which I understand is managed by LNER. Does anybody know if...

Another cross 'hard' border train service stopping

As of this week, there is now an international service between Tunisia and Algeria. Thread here: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/tunisia-algeria-international-service-restored.272286/

    Tunisia-Algeria international service restored

Railways Africa is reporting passenger rail service has resumed this week between Tunis and Annaba, after a 30 year hiatus. Three times a week in each direction, with modern rolling stock. Full story here. Excellent news, especially given the recent thread lamenting the partial demise of...

    Train Of Lights Trend

We did the one on the Bluebell Railway in 2021 and 2022 (after 2020 plans to do the Dartmouth one were scuppered). A very pleasant festive evening - and in fact my children often ask if we can go again.

    ScotRail cancelling services July 2024

There are now some PDFs published on Scotrail's temporary timetable page, albeit not for all days. For example, there's a Mon to Fri and a Saturday one for the Far North Line.

    ScotRail cancelling services July 2024

Argh. It looks like this will scupper our return from holiday. We're currently booked onto the 10:35 from Duncraig on Sunday 28th July. Returning to Kent via Inverness, Edinburgh and Kings Cross, with three children and luggage in tow. Based on the limited information available, it appears the...

Another cross 'hard' border train service stopping

Re: the original post, this is very sad news. The Tazara has been on my bucket list for ages. I recall watching a documentary on the BBC some years ago (possibly ‘African Railway’) that gave a glimpse into the challenges it faced. An epic journey on characterful trains. I hope it's revived.

Any experts on Argentinian passenger railways?

Thank you. That's a good point. I do have a copy at home. My suspicion is that railway services in Argentina are so changeable that a six-monthly timetable will struggle to keep up, but I'll keep an eye on it.

Any experts on Argentinian passenger railways?

Thank you. Some good tips here. I've also since found enelsubte.com, which appears to be a local railway transport news site with regular updates. @dutchflyer - I can't find any reference to all services ceasing. I know that's a risk given Javier Milei's agenda, and the financial realities of...

Any experts on Argentinian passenger railways?

I’m planning a cross-country trip for later this year from Buenos Aires to Santiago, Chile. I’m very keen to take the train if possible. Plan A was to take the once-a-week train from Buenos Aires to Palmira (just outside Mendoza), then bus across the Andes. But I understand that route is...

    Europe Summer 2024

I had the same concerns before I went (in April 2022 and December 2023, with children in tow) but other than a welcome centre for Ukrainian refugees at the railway station, it felt completely unaffected. I drew comfort from the fact it’s 100km to the western border of Ukraine, not the east...

    Europe Summer 2024

You could also head from Prague to Kosice on a Slovakian sleeper train. There are two departures a night - one via Zilina and the other via Bratislava, which are comfortable and very keenly priced. Kosice is an interesting city in and of itself, and from there it's a short hop on loco hauled...

Scotrail Kid for a Quid questions

I didn't get an itinerary, though the clerk clearly saw one (silly of me - I should have asked). Your previous post gets to the nub of my original question. Is it a "break of journey" when an overnight break is necessary to complete the ticketed trip?
