Deal proposed for Northern Conductors in the North West regarding Sunday working

And what's more in order to accommodate engineering blocks during the winter period some, mostly long-distance, routes simply had no trains before about 1600. Seems really hard to believe now.

    Enviro 400 Dennis Chassis Variants

I would suggest that the answer is that the level of detailed knowledge you have described is actually of little concern to the overwhelming majority of those with an interest in buses, whether as industry professionals or enthusiasts. That's not to say it isn't worth knowing, more that the...

Not quite PL but Leeds United v Harrogate Town should also be included here, the proximity of the clubs adding a little extra spice.

    Transdev Blazefield

Quite by chance I got to the bottom of one of these this evening. The machine from the former 1703 (last service with Harrogate on 26th January) was used by the ADL E200MMC demonstrator YX71OJB during its time in Harrogate (24th October to 15th November, presumably made redundant by the new...

    Transdev Blazefield

To add to the potential confusion the real 2104 is very much in service on the usual school runs. Is there any point in us enthusiasts making any attempt to remind operators of where such situations exist? What, if anything, do the rules around BODS say about it? And a minor correction: the...

Trivia: Downsized stations that are shells of their former selves?

Surprised nobody has yet mentioned Manchester Victoria. Yes it still has 6 platforms plus Metrolink but back in the day that number was 17. And more if you count the adjacent and linked Manchester Exchange station. How we could do with (some of) that lost capacity today.

    Harrogate line cancellations

I have mentioned this before but I believe it bears repeating. When 170s were first used on the Harrogate line they quickly gained a reputation for unreliability due to overheating. Seemingly the issue was (is) exacerbated by an unfortunate aerodynamic "incompatiblity" between 170s and the...

Why is the terminus situation south of the Thames so complicated and why was it never rationalised?

Even without looking at early 19th century maps it does appear that the curve in the GWR line to reach Paddington was to allow potential projection of the line beyond Praed Street across/under Hyde Park and skirting Buckingham Palace grounds to reach Victoria. Service developments might have...

Did 175s venture 'off-piste' in the early years?

For a while some Sunday services between Manchester and Preston/Blackpool/Cumbria were routed via Wigan as part of the normal timetable, generally via Bolton of course though ISTR occasional diversions via Atherton. GMPTE were not happy as they wanted all Wigan's Manchester services concentrated...

What's the point of the Harrogate-London LNER service?

There was a spell when the evening service was run by Mk4 sets with 47s operating north of Leeds. On arrival at Harrogate they ran ecs to Neville Hill via York rather than running round.

What's the point of the Harrogate-London LNER service?

This is the key point. The Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce lobbied long and hard to have the town's London service improved from the previous once-a-day timetable (uni-directional for a while) to support the businesses associated with the Harrogate Convention Centre. Post-Covid this is...

Differences between UK and mainland European railways

Loading gauge is likely a factor. European footbridges, especially over OHLE, have to be rather high.

If the line from Reading to Tonbridge had closed in the 1960s would it have ever reopened?

I had a quick mooch around Timetable World: the May 1975 WR WTT (Section PA) reveals the same pattern of workings. Yet the public timetable for 1975-6 clearly had the westbound am train starting at Redhill. I wonder if there was an amendment in a supplement that I didn't have or whether the...

If the line from Reading to Tonbridge had closed in the 1960s would it have ever reopened?

Not saying you're wrong but the only such diagram I was aware of at the time went the other way, the morning working being 0747 from Redhill: this also ran on Saturdays. It ceased with the summer timetable of 1976.

    Longevity of traction

While I am happy to accept the numbers quoted as being factually accurate how many of them reflect frontline daily service? Many of the older examples listed as still in service refer to limited numbers of vehicles which are not necessarily used very often or which had a long spell out of use...

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

Seems relatively common in Italy. Results in much finger pointing by non-Italian speakers.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

This still happens but rules around animal welfare have certainly made it less common.

I remember that very well, a massive productivity killer!

Could Drax services be rerouted via Ormskirk to avoid Manchester ?

As mentioned upthread the current arrangement, while less than perfect, is the most cost effective. Since nobody is going to fund new rail routes just for this traffic and Drax needs the cheapest transport costs for its biomass the current arrangements will simply continue until the flow ceases.
