SWR Class 458 to be retained

Also at the time SWR were struggling with a shortage of maintenance staff at Wimbledon. Withdrawing the 456s allowed more 455s to be in traffic which increased the overall capacity. By the time of their withdrawal they were only really operating in 8-car formations anyway; the last 10-car...

    SWR Metro fleet permanent withdrawals

The 450s freed up in the December timetable change are used to enable lengthening on some mainline services. There's no extra 450 diagrams on Suburban services for now at least.

    SWR Metro fleet permanent withdrawals

Looks like all bar one diagram off peak, with some extras in the peak with the Hounslow Loop services running too. Unfortunately the 4-car 450 diagram remains.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

Most stations have 4-6 car markers. The few locations on the Suburban network which still have separate 8 and 10 car markers are for operational reasons.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

The December diagrams include some weekend work in the LTP diagrams so we may see the first proper weekend diagrams, but the next weekday diagram is looking more like a January introduction. Sunday's are inside the working week on SWR so it doesn't really make any difference not having Sunday...

    SWR Metro fleet permanent withdrawals

Quite a few of those are booked formations, only the 2000, 2100 and 2109 Portsmouth services of those are short formations. There is some lengthening of mainline services from the December timetable change which will hopefully make a difference on some of the busiest short services.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

I understand it's slightly more than the 60 10-cars that are required, around 65.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

They have just listed some of the key trains, many of the diagrams will run all day.

10 more units next month certainly wasn't that plan very recently and just doesn't look achievable.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

701017 allocated to enter service this morning on 2J92, 0752 Surbiton to London Waterloo. Only 4 units in service though with the first part of the extra diagram starting today cancelled, 701036 picks it up from 2U21, the 0933 from London Waterloo after working the Shepperton diagram.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

It's not so much that it's not ready, just that the diagrams have been swapped round. Several of the current 701 diagrams are not shown as 701 in the December LTP diagrams.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

Likely not to be a 701 from the timetable change, with the 701 diagrams remaining as they are from next week. That will go over to 701 at some point over the next few months though.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

Definitely not imminently. PTI testing is required on all 701 routes prior to the trains being introduced, it's just currently being done on the Epsom line. The sidings are likely just a convenient place to reverse and get out of the way of other trains.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

I don't think it's a formal launch as such, but it's an event to show off the 701s to local politicians and others I assume. There's no imminent step change in the number of diagrams, it's going to be a slow and steady increase for several months.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

The shortage largely isn't guards though, it's drivers. The now more frequent cancellations due to shortages of crew is drivers.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

Relatively soon, at least one unit will run to Guildford at an early stage of the rollout, so within the next few months.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

It's just those. The plan is for those runs to be repeated on several upcoming Saturdays.

No, the plan for now is slow and steady increase.
