    Class 93 Tri-mode Loco

I've always noticed it on the Scarborough Spa Express. First few times it runs and everywhere's busy, then unless some rare loco turns up it can be practically ignored by half way through.

The Great Train Robbery - a technical question

This was 1963, a good part of the country still couldn't rely on the loco providing ANY electricity, it being a steam loco, and the carriage electrics would be powered from lead acid batteries under the carriages charged from a dynamo

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

Very interesting. It's funny that not long ago cell 2 was still being farmed, before it was quarried and then landfilled. Before that it was a coal tip for the nearby power station before that was closed then rebuilt as a gas powered one, the coal mostly coming in by barge. I always wondered...

MK3 DVT (821xx) on the ECML

Arsenal used to use the 'Pretendolino' rake a lot to get to away matches, frequently on the ECML.

    Getting Your Railway Facts Wrong

Tell me about, my 'favourite' non railway zombie facts concern the Sherman tank, firstly supposedly called a "Ronson" during WWII because it 'lights first time every time', even though the phrase wasn't invented until the 50s, so clearly wrong, and secondly that it was unusually prone to...

Trivia: Ideas and concepts that didn't work out

Tavern Cars. While the concept, has found favour in some places on the continent it's never really taken off here, despite a few different attempts over the years.

    Snow Disruption 5/1/25-6/1/25

TPE really got me annoyed with their services and the RRBs earlier. Fair enough, expected disruption, we'd 7 inches of snow at home, but when they started running trains again all the RRBs were immediately withdrawn. That meant anyone in the central area, mostly the "smaller" shacks in West...

    Midnight - 0000?

It's showing manual in TRUST anyway, that's all I know.

    Midnight - 0000?

I'm not even sure how that's become 0000 as it's a manual time input as 2359. Sometimes auto times will report in as 0000, but manual ones can only be 2359 or 0001.

145 years since the Tay Bridge Disaster

Wasn't that bridge basically sound as designed, but failed due to subsequent strengthenings for heavier loads being inadequate (though was deemed good for the time) and, perhaps most importantly, one of the corners being unsupported due to flood damage, placing constant strain, and subsequently...

    Interesting platform choice at York

They're booked that way. Can't be certain but it could be something to do with the Northern being booked out of platform 1 at 45 and the XC being booked out of 5 at 44. With the high end platforms otherwise occupied that only leaves platform 3 for at GC. Then when the LNER service is booked to...
