Searching for a viaduct on the Oldham-Ashton line

Well - that certainly helps explain why there is virtually no trace left! I wonder where the stone ended up - if it was indeed reused elsewhere. Yeah, agreed! Maybe "thoughtful" is more appropriate than "radical" - because as a result we've now ended up in a situation where passengers wanting...

Searching for a viaduct on the Oldham-Ashton line

First I'd heard about it but that would be fantastic - do you know if there's any reference online? Had a quick look but nothing forthcoming. I know there have been rumours for ages about a proposed metrolink extension between Ashton and Oldham but I'll believe that when I see it...! Does make...

Searching for a viaduct on the Oldham-Ashton line

My dad and I visited the old Park Bridge ironworks inbetween Ashton and Oldham last week and when we were there, saw a big old viaduct in lots of photos on the information boards. Remarkably there is hardly a trace of it left, save for some overgrown stone pillars on either side of a river which...

    The Micklehurst Loop

Nice article @rogerfarnworth - so much history for such a relatively short line. A a little further up the line from Diggle is the butterhouse tunnel. I posted some photos a while ago https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/abandoned-butterhouse-tunnel.215450/ I'll be having a read of parts 1-3...

    Abandoned Butterhouse Tunnel

Took my exercise today in the form of a run up to the old Butterhouse Tunnel in Diggle. A really cool (and creepy) place near the big Standedge tunnels. It was part of the old Micklehurst Loop, an old, short line between Stalybridge and Diggle. It doesn't look like the portal has been touched...

Were railways better before passengers were referred to as "customers"?

I'd tend to agree "passengers" sounds a bit more friendly and for me conjures the image of fireplaces in the waiting room and wooden carriages on the tracks! "Customers" reminds me of work - but I think we can at least agree not to call them "users" !

    Mottram Yard query

Thanks all for the replies! Interesting if it was for cattle, I'd never have pieced that together. As you say the old maps show two small sidings which are roughly around the area I was in. I thought as much re the capped structure - I imagine there's not much documentation around it but I'd...

    Mottram Yard query

Hello all. This is my first time posting since 2005, I knew this 16 year old account would come in handy one day...! I've been exploring a bit round my local area recently, round Tameside/Hyde/Glossop. Went to the old Godley turntable last week and then yesterday came across this old wooden...
