    Britain's Most Scenic Bus routes

I recently did the 901 from Huddersfield to Hebden Bridge - absolutely gorgeous, particularly the central section between Stainland and Cragg Vale. The drop into Ripponden was a particular treat. It may not be on a par with the Lakes, but this is nominally in a metropolitan area! Only downside...

‘Cyclists who kill could face life sentence’

It's also probably got worse with the rise of delivery services - it may be an unfair stereotype on some who I'm sure are considerate, but a great many of these delivery cyclists do ride carelessly and aggressively. I'm sure this isn't just their fault as I doubt the delivery apps set...

Off-board fare purchase on bus systems

There are similar tickets in Tyne and Wear, but additionally a transfer ticket which you buy at a Metro station and covers a metro journey then a bus journey. In theory, you could probably get away with buying a transfer at a Metro station and then not using the Metro portion and just using it...

    Ember: Electric coach service

I also suspect that if journeys do end up being consistently late then they may change the timetables - I'm not sure exactly how they designed them but if they did a sample of runs of the route (for instance) it's possible they somehow underestimated journey times.

    Highland Rover

No, it wouldn't be valid on that service - it's valid on the West Highland line trains from Glasgow up to Oban/Fort William/Mallaig and on various lines radiating out from Inverness (including to Aberdeen and Aviemore but no further). You're supposed to get between the two parts by coach (or, if...

Lumo - passenger experience criticised in Which? review

Likewise I've rarely found many empty seats on the Saturday evening Edinburgh to Newcastle - at 2056, it's almost an hour later than LNER's last service. Largely it is well used for journeys between the two cities but you do get some connecting from further afield (I've certainly used it for...

    Station pubs (part two?)

The station pub in Lancaster is a very good one - especially if you like the Lancaster Brewery beers (and I do!). It's not the cheapest but still reasonable value at about £4.50 a pint (though my memories are slightly hazy as to the exact cost)...

    Ember: Electric coach service

£23.10 each way seems fairly reasonable to me - a few years back I paid £39.30 for a day return (booked a few days ahead of travel) when Citylink ran a direct service from Edinburgh to Fort William. Compared with that service, the journey times are also quite noticeably quicker - around three...

    Arriva North East

Rather oddly these appear to be stops on a loop and the bus calls at both, but is timetabled differently on the outbound and return (even though it is the same bus!). For instance, according to the timetable, the 96 leaves Whitby bus station at 1010 and makes its first call on the Eskdale...

    Stagecoach East Scotland

Though I'd rather do it that way around (connecting onto a bus that's roughly four times per hour) than the reverse - I wouldn't wish the risk of a potential two hour wait at Halbeath on anyone!

    Settlement Association

Wolsingham in County Durham is another town which hosts an agricultural show.

    Settlement Association

Lincoln's most notorious mythical figure is its Imp - legend has it that this imp is also responsible for the iconic crooked spire in  Chesterfield.

    Settlement Association

The Thames Barrier is located on the northern boundary of Charlton; another settlement with a similar (though smaller!) flood barrier is  York.

How far would you consider local?

For me it's largely based on my own travel patterns and where I tend to visit, as that informs my familiarity with the area. There are places two or three miles away from me that I wouldn't really see as local (I'd simply never have any reason to go there) versus places ten miles away that I do...

    Stagecoach East Scotland

How many people actually use these routes for the full length? Whenever I do the Fife expresses (whether from Edinburgh or Glasgow) there always seems to be a reasonable amount of turnover at places like Glenrothes or Dunfermline, but I'm not local so I don't see what these flows are like day in...

Northumberland Line : potential expansion and timetable improvements?

The one issue there is that Gosforth is served fairly poorly by the Metro - from most destinations along the Northumberland Line you can get a direct bus to Gosforth High Street (or to Regent Centre) - the only exception is Seaton Delaval. Whereas a connection at Northumberland Park only gives...

    Poor quality of destination displays

Also on many of the routes (certainly the ones local to me) the destination display changes during the journey. On rural sections of route the display would specify Newcastle, but once into Gateshead would become more specific, similar to the Manx example above. And in fairness, the distinction...

Northumberland Line: trip planning & reports

On Thursday evening towards the tail end of the peak loadings were fine (though not exceptional). Would estimate about 20-30 got off at Seaton Delaval (where I boarded with a handful of others). At Ashington, maybe 40-50 off. It does seem plausible to me that (at least in the short to medium...

Northumberland Line: trip planning & reports

Along with some other forum members I popped in for a sunday roast yesterday - I found it brilliant for food (good quality, excellent portions, reasonable prices) but less so for drinks. No real ales available, and the lagers on offer were closer to Newcastle prices than typical Northumberland...

How many languages do you speak?

I'm sort of monolingual and sort of trilingual - I have fairly strong GCSEs in German and French (particularly the former) and found it very easy particularly to read written text when I was on school trips to the continent. I very rarely travel abroad (in fact never have since childhood, almost...
