Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

They do have bigger windows and much better legroom in standard though than the 390s.

Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

The ride seems better than on other 80x I've been on before. Revisions to the design or just smoother track on the southern WCML?

Grand Central apply for Newcastle - Brighton direct

Not all, but a significant number of Gatwick destinations are served by northern airports. How many people from Newcastle say regularly fly from Gatwick, and would benefit from a direct train?

Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

On 805013 , paired with 805009 just out of Euston. The seat reservation displays seem on the blink, fortunately the train is pretty empty. The human tannoy announcements are too soft also. Amusingly the internal display and announcements thinks the next station is Bangor...

Grand Central apply for Newcastle - Brighton direct

Most of Gatwick's flights are short haul ones, of the sort replicated across the country. Someone in Birmingham or Newcastle would find many of the same destinations available from their local airport.

Double deck trains - again ...

Does anyone stand upstairs on European double deckers anyway? I can't remember whether I needed to stoop slightly to walk through the train or not on my last experience (the photo is from upstairs on a Belgian double decker) but I can't imagine anyone standing there instead of the open area by...

Double deck trains - again ...

Also, could STP's passenger lounges cope with even more people on a single service?

Grand Central apply for Newcastle - Brighton direct

Oxford (once wired) to Brighton sounds like a useful route, but one more suited to a regular dual voltage EMU (387, 350 etc)

Increasingly sad state of London Underground trains - graffiti and disrepair

I was on the Bakerloo line today, and every carriage of my 72 stock train had some tagging INSIDE. That's simply not the case for most lines. The Northern Line 95s may look a bit grubby outside, but there's no regular graffiti inside or outside. And on National Rail, Southeastern trains for...

    New Station calendar

The whole point is that Universal will build a much bigger and better station, rather than the council doing a cheap job, which will then be ripped up in a few years anyway.

    Ladies only compartments

Is there a major issue with lone women on trains feeling unsafe in this country anyway? As opposed to once they leave the train at an unmanned station, and then have to walk along poorly lit streets. And it wouldn't necessarily be safer in a women only carriage, if you're the only person there...

    Ladies only compartments

We definitely need separate ladies only compartments for hen parties, to give the rest of us some peace :E

    Lines for Level Crossing Closures

That's always a risk though, and whether it's an acceptable risk now I'm not sure. The London Underground for example is MUCH more secure than the "southern" 3rd rail area, with no (public) pedestrian crossings, and strong fences along lines and bridges to prevent any access to the tracks...

    Lines for Level Crossing Closures

As a general statement, in an ideal world I'd like to remove all level crossings (whether foot or vehicle) crossing 3rd rail electrified lines, as the live rail is a constant danger whether trains are passing or not.

King & Queen to Durham (17/04): should such journeys be made by train?

I have visions of King Charles getting off an LNER Azuma at Durham... "These seats are really quite...appalling."

Increasingly sad state of London Underground trains - graffiti and disrepair

The chemical nature of graffiti hasn't changed in the last 2 years, so there's no excuse for the deterioration of the appearance of certain classes of train.

    Class 376 refurbishment 2025/2026

It's a pleasing livery. The 375s look so much better in blue than the dull original white.

2024 Tube Stock (Siemens Inspiro London)

Seems strange as an outsider that type acceptance hasn't happened yet, is it running late?

Weird Places for Services to Terminate

Yes. From the platforms at Golders Green you can also see the occasional train going straight from the depot into the middle tunnel, which is the southbound running track to Hampstead.

    Class 376 refurbishment 2025/2026

Yes we would like more done to them, but the 376s were overdue a repaint anyway, seeing that they're 20 years old now.
