    Cholsey and Wallingford Railway

I popped along today having only found out about it because of this thread. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The train was full in both directions. They seem to have a good little operation going there.

    Interrail Passes

Yes, this. As an example, on my most recent ticket I travelled from Great Britain to mainland Europe and back on three occasions. I used the return domestic journey on the second trip and the outward on the third. I also used one day of travel to go from Belfast to Dublin.

    Interrail UK/Ireland

This is timely and really helpful. I came onto ask almost exactly the same question and have never seen it definitively answered before. I have more days on my pass than I'm likely to use (that's what happens when you buy one months in advance when they are on offer) and happen to be in...

    Non-Urgent TOPS Requests

Passing through Maidenhead on another train on Friday at just after 13:00 I saw what from Realtime Trains looked to be 6A50, Whatley Quarry to Hanwell. It had two 59s on the front and there was a Freightliner locomotive in the middle of the train. Any idea what these were and what was going on?

    Interrail Passes

Thanks. I rarely use it myself but it's helpful to know it's a known issue and not a problem with my 'phone.

    Interrail Passes

Given this thread is about how the passes work, it's as good a place as any to ask if anyone is having the same problem I am currently having. Basically, the app can't find local stations. I've checked that everything is switched on in my 'phone in respect of apps knowing my location and I've...

    Eurostar Any Belgian Station

Thanks. It wasn't clear from the link if there were other restrictions, such as Belgian nationals only, or you need something extra (like a senior railcard in the UK, for example).

    Eurostar Any Belgian Station

On a slight tangent, what are the rules on using over-65 tickets? I'm an over-65 UK national. Do I just buy an over-65 ticket and show my passport if my ticket is checked?

    Eurostar Any Belgian Station

Is it still £10? Looked more like £13 when I checked recently. Anyway, I agree with the general point.

    Independent businesses on stations?

Surprised Knaresborough hasn't had a mention. There's a coffee/tea bar, an antiques/secondhand shop, a pub and a place to get pictures framed.

Trivia: Football grounds next to railway lines.

It's barely 100 metres. From its opening in 1995 until 1997 when they filled the two remaining corners in you could see trains go by from my seat. An increase in ground capacity, but a decrease in entertainment, in my opinion.

    Border protocols at "Schengen" borders

Well, I literally crossed the Schengen border today, walking across from Germany into Luxembourg. No sign of anyone checking anyone in either direction.

    Border protocols at "Schengen" borders

I've just done that. The guard said there would be checks when we got to Aachen and to have our passports ready, but no one came in my coach.

German border checks: Impact on international rail travel?

As I said in my post, the train ran slow to Eschweiler, I'm assuming to allow the police time to get through the train. That accounted for most of the delay, not the stop itself.

German border checks: Impact on international rail travel?

So I caught an ICE from Brussels earlier today. In the DB site there's a note on each of these trains to the effect that there will be border control checks after Aachen. The arrival time in Cologne is adjusted by 10 minutes. What happens is that the police get on the train at Aachen ie after...

Alcohol restrictions on European trains, and how do you define a quiet coach?

Racegoers are as bad as, if not worse than, other groups. Travelling through York before or after a race meeting can be a very unpleasant experience. And my experience at travelling in the quiet areas on German trains is that the locals are no more observant than British people are. There's...

    Fast Charge Battery-Electric Train Trial

Thanks for the video and explanation. As an occasional reader I find wading through umpteen pages of posts to establish a few basic facts a bit time-consuming so your summary is welcome and useful.
