June 2024 reopening of the line between Clitheroe and Hellifield for passenger trains

I agree, to make sense it needs to continue to Skipton. Reinstating the bay at Hellifield would be ideal though the line is not so heavily used as to make it essential. it would of course abstract PX from the mooted SELRAP scheme.

Pacers running on preserved railways - your thoughts?

If I visit a premier league heritage line and pay full price I expect steam haulage and by something more prestigious than an industrial saddle tank, though contrariwise I don’t need a pacific. However, Pacers have their place on diesel days/weekends as part of the overall attraction. I wouldn’t...

    Dual gauge in Ukraine.

Press reports today cite the massive difficulties in transshipping grain at the Ukraine/Poland or Ukraine/Romania border. Now I guess that regauging one’s rail network in the middle of a war is not a priority but is it physically possible to dual gauge 1435/1520mm track?

What are the rings on this class 387 pantograph?

Many thanks Of course I’m now puzzled as to why these are not found on all other pan heads, including those of more recently-introduced classes.

What are the rings on this class 387 pantograph?

Seen on 387 162 - what are the rings on the edges of the pan head?

Collision and derailment near Salisbury (Fisherton Tunnel) 31/10/21

A point not made, though implicitly understood by professional railway staff is that following an adverse distant signal a train still proceeds towards the next signal but is prepared to stop. The driver neither stops as soon as possible after the distant as it’s likely that the next signal...

Collision and derailment near Salisbury (Fisherton Tunnel) 31/10/21

I posted the question to which Dan G replied so perhaps you want to take a shot at me? I simply asked as I had not understood where this had stopped or by how much it was separated and had not seen any pictures to illustrate this. Excuse me for wanting more detail but that is what the previous...

Collision and derailment near Salisbury (Fisherton Tunnel) 31/10/21

The point of impact of 1L53 was in the rear quarter of the penultimate coach of 1F30 which stopped about 30-35m west of the junction which suggests that the GWR train was moving when the collision occured and stopped only because of that collision.

Collision and derailment near Salisbury (Fisherton Tunnel) 31/10/21

Is there anywhere a picture of 158762, presumably some way west (down) of the incident?

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

2B13 was about 3 hours earlier though it was delayed 9 minutes before being terminated at Stonehaven. It’s not clear if is was still at platform when 1T08 set off North.

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

Was 2B13 still at platform in Stonehaven when 1T08 started back North?

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

Did 2B13 only initiate GSM-R REC on arrival at Stonehaven? 2B13 is shown as 9 late at Stonehaven.

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

We know that 2B13 passed the crash site (same track) ~07:00 and that 1T08 passed the same about a minute later. Whether either reported anything is not known but if either did it cannot have been considered serious as 1T08 was allowed to proceed northbound before 09:30. Would 1T08 have been...

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

The Montrose -Inverurie dmu 2B13 is shown passing Carmont at 0658 (on time) but was terminated at Stonehaven 07:13 or 9 minutes late. One can only surmise that nothing passed the incident site until 1T08 was heading back to Stonehaven too, nearly 2.5 hours later.

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

Naturally I have every sympathy with those and the families of those affected but also as a student of railway safety many of us want to understand the exact circumstances. The history and study of incidents is not ghoulish but a genuine interest in how every incident is an opportunity to...

TPE Mark 5A coaching stock progress

1E37 1256 Liverpool Lime Street to Scarborough today A couple of observations: There are no coat hooks in First Class (or in Standard), this appears to have been a design omission. The Wi-Fi has not yet been enabled on Nova 3 yet.

London Terminals to Darlington: is travelling via Leeds a permitted route?

Please excuse me if this is not posted appropriately but I want to take a ride on an LNER Azuma on a KGX - LDS diagram. I have a off peak single from KGX to DAR. Is an off-peak journey KGX - LDS on LNER then LDS - DAR on TPE permitted? The option of breaking at DON is not practicable.
