Long distance trains should call at Worcestershire Parkway

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/worcestershire-parkway-station-progress.103108/page-23 Interesting thread. I’m dismayed at the lack of calls by the Ply-Edi and Bri-Man services. The whole point of the station when it was first envisaged in the 1970’s was to...

December 2015 Cotswold Line timetable changes

Thanks for the reply jimm. I would respond to your points but they'll just be met by more sarcasm and sniping.

December 2015 Cotswold Line timetable changes

If the standard time of 2hr 8m from December 2018 (at presumably a standard pattern hourly service) goes ahead then I think that's pretty much all the residents of Worcester can ask for. My dismay is the overall slowing down of services in recent years. To have a peak time London to...

December 2015 Cotswold Line timetable changes

Thanks for the long response I take your point about the need to stop at Hanborough. The timings noted about the Cathedrals Express are also true, it did miss out Reading. But my timings about the 10.10 Cotswold and Malvern Expeess were also true - Padddington to Shrub Hill in 1hr 52 with...

December 2015 Cotswold Line timetable changes

No. And to be fair Cheltenham also suffers from a farcically slow service to London. Almost exactly like Worcester, where trains took around two hours ten or twenty years ago, they now take up to half an hour longer.

December 2015 Cotswold Line timetable changes

It appears that my pro-Worcester sentiment is not a popular one on here! For the record, I was stating that Hanborough (population 2,630) and Kingham (population 913) could cope with a two-hourly off-peak and hourly peak service from London. Worcester (population 100,000) suffers from an...

December 2015 Cotswold Line timetable changes

I'm not suggesting that Hanborough, Charlbury, Kingham and Moreton should be skipped. But a service every two hours off-peak and hourly at peak times should suffice. Which would give more chance of an accelarated time for Worcester. For example : Odd Hours : Oxford, Hanborough, Charlbury...

December 2015 Cotswold Line timetable changes

Mod Note: Split from this thread It really isn't if you live in Worcester. The new 16.22 departure replacing the 15.52 now takes 2 hours 37 minutes. For 125 miles. Stopping at every hamlet in the Cotswolds. When are GWR going to provide a limited stop service to Worcester? It's not like...

Fast Bedford Thameslink trains, where do they overtake?

    Really interesting replies, thanks

Fast Bedford Thameslink trains, where do they overtake?

Thanks for the answers guys. I suppose what I was wondering is with the Bedford trains switching between the slow and fast lines does this not provide pathing issues with EMT services and potential for delays? ie a fast to Bedford switches from the slow to the fast just after Kentish Town and an...

Fast Bedford Thameslink trains, where do they overtake?

Thanks - I was there in the evening peak when there are no terminating services, so didnt see these platforms used. So the fast Bedfords must switch to the fast lines between Kentish Town and West Hampstead

    Cross Country route pre-Voyagers

No-one will convince me that Voyagers are fit for purpose for long distance travel, but the reliabilty, speed and frequency of services is so much better than in pre-operation princess days. I regularly make a trip from Wakefield to Birmingham after work on a Friday. Here are my current...

Is rail travel in the North really that bad compared to the South?

Ok I'm using it as a worst case scenario. But really, even if the interior of the pacer has been refurbished, and the 319 is in a sorry state inside - one is a four coach, quiet, electric train... and the other is a two (short) coach noisy diesel that looks like a bus.

Is rail travel in the North really that bad compared to the South?

Those 319's may be a bit battered now but theyre luxury compared to a pacer

    Old timings, new timings

Lots of examples both good and bad. Cotswold Line had a 1hr 52 timing from London to Worcester in the mid-80's, now the fastest is about 2h 10, with about 3 extra stops. Most trains take over 2h 20m now though, all down to ridiculous padding in the timetable. On the plus side, theres far more...

Is rail travel in the North really that bad compared to the South?

My main gripe is also the rolling stock. Pacers are embarrasing. Imagine a visitor to Manchester arriving at the airport and being transported to the city centre in a 30 year old, diesel, uncomfortable, noisy, 2 carriage bus shell on crap bogies. What a first impression of the North! Whereas...

Fast Bedford Thameslink trains, where do they overtake?

With, I hope a very quick answer... Where do fast Bedford Thameslink trains overtake stopping services? I was at Kentish Town recently and all Thameslink trains seemed to use the Easternmost platforms, nothing used the centre pair and EMT used the western pair (without platforms). I...

    Control Period 6 - ideas?

Ah ok. Personally my wish-list for the North-East would be : Blyth/Ashington - Washington added to the Tyne and Wear Metro network Tees-side metro introduced using 2-car Class 170's running every 20 mins between Darlington and Saltburn, and Hartlepool and Nunthorpe. Hourly extensions to...

    Control Period 6 - ideas?

Surely there wouldnt be any Pacers left after CP5? There's mass orders of new trains, which means there should be mass cascades of rolling stock, and the awful and embarrasing Pacers should be the first to go.

    Western Access to Heathrow

The fast lines out between Paddington and Reading could cope with 16 trains per hour couldnt they? ie. 4tph Bristol 2tph Wales 3tph Oxford 3tph Newbury/West of England 4tph Heathrow If, as now, the Heathrow trains left at xx10, 25, 40 and 55, then assuming a 15 minute time penalty for...
