takethetrain.co.uk not working for a few days

My preferred ticket booking site www.takethetrain.co.uk isn't working and has been down for a few days - not a good scenario when you make your living from your website. Is anyone aware of this being the end of TtT ? It looks like I'll have to use Plan B, Southwest Trains - and stay away...

Is the Scotrail Bargain Berths webpage MIA or RIP

With Scotrail moving over to the new (improved ?) website, the Baragain Berths requests seem to be directed towats the (hideous) mixing deck. Is the Bargain Berths webpage MIA or RIP ? If its gone, thats a real shame as it perfoirmed a very useful function, for both the TOC and the custome.

Definition of an acceptable delay on a +connections ticket

I wonder if someone may be able to offer me some advice. In November, I'm travelling from Grange Over Sands to Richmond, London (to watch the England vs Fiji game, KO 14.30 at Twickenham). I've got my Advance Tickets and they are VWC + Connections (incl the London Underground Symbol). We...

Missing Advance Ticket - or is it me losing the plot ?

I woke up the other day with baited breath and eagerly logged onto the various ticketing websites, to see if Virgin had released Advance tickets for Sat 10th November to Richmond (London), from Grange Over Sands Joy Of Joys, they had, and I managed to snabble up 8 tickets for an absolute steal...

Will fare competition between FTPE & First ICWC exist ?

I imagine that it is to early for anyone to have a definitive answer, but once the WCML is turned over to the First Group, will this effectively mean the end of competion for customers who want to travel from the North West on the WCML. Or would/do FTPE and First ICWC operate as totally seperate...

Weekend First Pricing - a couple of questions

In the near future I'm having a 'grand circular' trip of England & Central Scotland with my 5 year old daughter and I'm fancying a bit of a splurge. From the East Coast website, a Weekend First upgrade for London to Edinburgh will be be £25, however, it doesn't mention how much the upgrade is...

Happy planning, for a happy trip, for a happy fare.

Just for a change, I thought that I'd inject a happy story on here. My 5 year old daughter loves travelling on trains (especially with me :D), the further the better, enjoys changing trains, taking different routes, doesn't mind getting up early etc, etc. We've just booked Grange over...

Would this be classed as stopping short ?

Tonight I've made a booking for an Advanced Ticket from Kendal to 'Manchester Stations' as I'm not sure if Deansgate, Oxford Road or PIcadilly would best fit my circumstances (a friend is collecting me in Manchester), however, when the confirmation email has come through, the journey destination...

Free First class weekend upgrade for Virgin Anytime tickets ?

Do Virgin still allow holders of Anytime tickets to upgrade to First Class free of charge at the weekends? I can find reference to it in the past, but nothing that is current.

Kyle to Mallaig via Skye travel required (and B&Bs on Skye)

In July, I'm planning on doing the above trip with my 5 year old daughter, and I'm wondering if anyone can offer us some advice ? The train travel portion of the trip is covered, with us getting into Kyle at 15.39 on the Saturday and then leaving Mallaig at 10.10 on the Sunday. So far so...

    Class 180 Adelante on WCML

My eyes may have decieved me, but I'm fairly sure that I saw an Adelante Southbound through Oxenholme about 12.45 pm today. I imagine that the extra capacity would be very welcome somewhere along the journey. It was in First Group livery and looked splendid with the Cumbrian Fells as a...

Astonishingly cheap long distance train travel

Every 3 to 4 weeks I do a (fairly) long trip with one of my children, taking advantage of buying Advance tickets and our Friends and Family Railcard. Usually I just look at the price of the trip for both of us, but whilst I was bored last night, I looked at how much my son or daughter pays...

    New engines for DRS

Apologies if it has already been posted, but it looks like DRS are splashing out on some new traction Direct Rail Services invests in new diesel locomotives

    Class 56 through Oxenholme

A first for me this afternoon. I saw a Class 56 (56311) going through Oxenholme northbound at 12.45 with a small unloaaded container train - something that I thought that I would never see on the WCML.

    Afghanistan by train

This is a tongue in cheek request, from my four year old daughter, but if the Forum Rules allow it and some people are prepared to 'play the game@, we'd appreciate it "Daddy, please can we go there on the train sometime ?" says Mini Scooby, whilst watching the news the other night "Where...

Grange Over Sands - Euston - Fort William - Grange Over Sands 2 day trip.

For my daughters fifth birthday next year, we are considering doing the above trip. She loves train travel and for her (& me) the further really is the better. We can pick up a train after school on the Friday, & get into Euston for about 8ish**. have a meal in Euston and then board the...

maybe a daft question - how does a TOC pay for overhead electricity used ?

This may be a bone stupid question, but its piqued my curiousity. How does a TOC pay for the electricty that it drws from overhead cables ? I'm thinking of it in this context. Scooby trains runs a Voyager Service from Birmingham to Glasgow. I know that the Voyager uses (say) 5 gallons of...

Tipping off the Fare Dodgers, or playing it straight.

This may be a common occurence for others, but it was the first time that I'd come across it. As our train was rolling into Preston the other night, the guard was advising the passengers the 'change' options that were available to them. But then he said "for those passengers who are travelling...

how many miles on a 'mainline' engine before being withdrawn from service

I realise that there will not be a definitive answer for this, but does anyone have a rough idea about how many miles a 'typical' mainline engine will have covered before it is withdrawn. I'm thinking of (say) an 87 that spent its time going from Scotland to England all day, a Deltic that ran...
