    Caledonian Sleeper

The seats and carriage are awful, a huge step down from the Mk. 2 seated coach. They can offer great value, especially with a railcard, but don't expect any meaningful sleep. By way of comparison in the Mk. 2 on London to Aberdeen I could usually get enough sleep to function the following day...

    Aviemore incident 29/9/23

Saw the observation car heading south, by road, this afternoon.

    Caledonian Sleeper

Seat comfort is definitely subjective. The new seats are one of the reasons I largely gave up on the sleeper for my weekly London-Aberdeen commute.

    Caledonian Sleeper

If I remember rightly I pressed the button (I think there was one), waited 30 minutes. Went to buffet car, was told they'd be round to take an order. Waited until midnight then eyemask on followed by next to no sleep in those apalling new seats.

    Caledonian Sleeper

Not a sniff of service in the seats on my last two Highlander trips (well not before midnight anyway).

Caledonian Sleeper: How should it be run and what changes would you like to see?

I'm not sure there would be, particularly on a Sunday. The fact is though that, for your circumstances, the Highlander provides a solution. This scenario does not therefore seem to be a great argument for keeping the Lowlander.

Caledonian Sleeper: How should it be run and what changes would you like to see?

'Day' trains or flights cover this from the central belt. It may mean being out of bed early, but the lowlander keeps you out of bed until late the night before.

Caledonian Sleeper: How should it be run and what changes would you like to see?

I often wonder how many people know about the Caledonian seats. They don't seem to be mentioned much (at all?) in the marketing. Cost wise they're pretty good value for money. It's just a shame that from a comfort perspective they're such a step down from the Mk2s (in my opinion anyway).

Caledonian Sleeper: How should it be run and what changes would you like to see?

Exactly, it's the intermediate stops that have, for me, made the sleeper useful. Well, until the increased berth costs and horrendous new seats largely put me off.

    Caledonian Sleeper

I've seen similar views expressed a few times on this forum. I travelled this route earlier in the week. Whilst no Settle-Carlisle or HML most of it was very pleasant on a bright autumn morning. In particular Inverurie to Keith had some lovely rolling Aberdeenshire countryside.

    Caledonian Sleeper

Seat comfort is hugely subjective but in my experience the Mk5 seated coach is awful. I couldn't get comfortable in the seats at all, and got zero sleep both times I used it. Carriage felt cold, exacerbated by the window frame a/c outlet. In contrast in the old Mk2 seats I slept reasonably well...

    Caledonian Sleeper

It would be interesting to know if the passenger profile of the Caledonian Sleeper has changed following the change in franchise arrangements and subsequent price increases. I've stopped using it for commuting due to the price increases (and the poor comfort in the seats), and now fly from the...

    Caledonian Sleeper

It's been 5-6 years since my days of joining the sleeper north at Crewe. The waiting room(s?) were open and usually warmish, but all refreshment facilities closed, all station lights were on so not dark at all. I never found it 'creepy', still a reasonable amount of traffic at that time of night...

    Caledonian Sleeper

When I semi-regularly used the service from Crewe there was always a handful of us boarding there to head north.

ScotRail Industrial Relations issues (including conductor strike action)

As an inconvenienced passenger, it would be appreciated if either side would have the decency to explain exactly why this dispute is happening. 1634470327 Well said.

ScotRail Industrial Relations issues (including conductor strike action)

I heard of this on the news this morning. Whatever the rights and wrongs of this the RMT representative who provided comment did nothing to gain public support because he gave no indication of the specific nature of the grievance(s). I then went to the RMT website, again plenty of angry rhetoric...

Stations where trains only commence service/terminate service when heading from/to a Depot

Huntly? Only one qualifying service a day which originates as ECS from Aberdeen platform 2, which (not being in public use) is sort of like a depot.

    Mossend-Inverness-Aberdeen-Inverness?

Thanks all, explains why the noise coming through the bedroom window was different from the usual 158/170/HST!
