    Hull Trains HST

Without wishing to take this thread off track, Hull Trains named 222101 Professor George Gray in 2005.

Questions about loco driving inside a freight yard

Last time I was at Worcester Shrub Hill station (a couple of years ago) there was a yellow disc ground signal. Certainly the first I've ever seen. Don't know if it's still there though.

Virgin Trains East Coast franchise to end 24 June 2018 and is temporarily re-nationalised

I have Advance paper tickets for after the changeover which are marked VTEC booked train only. I'm sure I'll be fine, but what are the chances of a jobsworth guard saying "this is not a VTEC train"?

    How popular are diesel galas?

The NYMR did not have a diesel gala last year and is not having one this year. I can only assume this is for financial reasons, but the last one in 2016 was excellent with a visiting Deltic and immaculate Class 40 as star attractions. They've compensated diesel fans by having one or two diesel...

What is your most memorable train journey?

Despite decades of travelling, a particular favourite was quite recently, at the 2016 NYMR diesel gala. Leaving Pickering we were hauled by a Class 37. At Grosmont the 37 was taken off and a steam engine coupled at the front (I was in the rear coach so could not see which engine it was). Then...

Trivia: Lines proposed but never built (or where a line should have been built)

A Light Railway was proposed between Beverley on the Hull-Scarborough line and the village of North Frodingham, but was never built. Curiously the line is clearly shown as existing on the tile maps which still exist at some former NER stations.

The East Yorkshireman Sat 17th June

According to RTT, the Yorkshire Coast Statesman on 3rd June which was also due to run down the coast line, travelled via Malton both to and from Scarborough. It certainly looks like there is an issue on the coast line, which wasn't there in the recent past. There's a similar Yorkshire Coast...

Derby to Southampton Airport Parkway, out via London, return not via London

I would simply buy two singles. The 11.01 EMT service on the 20th from Derby to St Pancras followed by the 13.35 SWT service from Waterloo to Southampton Airport Parkway is £32.50 for a single. The 15.53 CrossCountry direct service via Birmingham on the 21st is £44 for a single. You will...

Railway companies that started and finished elsewhere!

The Hull & Barnsley Railway never got as far as Barnsley!

Grimsby Pacer's Trip to North Yorkshire.

There are many long-closed stations on the Hull-Scarborough line with several of the platforms still visible. North of Beverley there was Lockington. North of Driffield there were Lowthorpe, Burton Agnes and Carnaby. North of Bridlington there were Flamborough, Speeton and the branch to...

    Trivia: Most Platforms lost.

Hull Paragon had 14 passenger platforms when rebuilt in 1904. Over the years it has lost a staggering 8 platforms to now operate on only 6, bizzarely numbered 2-7 as platform 1 has been out of passenger use for many years.

    Tracks on high ridges question

The mainline approach to Hull is from the west, so to reach the eastern docks and the Hornsea & Withernsea branches, the railway crossed the city at ground level, necessitating several level crossings which caused chaos every day. When the Hull & Barnsley Railway decided to build their own line...

    Trivia: Longest "Long Siding"

I'm sure I read somewhere that the Whitby branch is signalled as a long siding (from Nunthorpe?), and I'm sure it's the longest branch line in the UK, at 35 miles. But then when is a branch not a branch? Is the Kyle line considered to be a branch? If so it's about 64 miles from Dingwall to Kyle.

Hull's new biomass fuel plant for Drax power station

I don't know why the media have suddenly latched on to this. The biomass loading silo was completed in February this year and trains started running soon after. There are usually about two trains in and out each day using the new Drax branded waggons. You can work out the route from Real Time...

At what point does waiting to buy a ticket stop being reasonable?

--- old post above --- --- new post below --- Hull has windows marked like this. They are marked something like Tickets for Travel Today and Advanced Tickets/Rovers/Railcards etc. Assuming people read the signs it seems to keep things moving.

    The Humber Bosun 13/7/14

In this month's Railway Magazine it lists the traction for this tour as one Class 67.

I'm planning a freedom of Scotland trip

As has been said you can't do it all on one Rover, so some careful thought and planning is required to get the most from it. I've used a Freedom of Scotland Rover to do the lines around Inverness. It was great but there's obviously large parts of the country I didn't get anywhere near...

Missing platforms / Unused Platforms & other bits

Platform 1 at Hull certainly was used by passenger trains, but has not been for many years. I remember boarding stopping trains to York from Platform 1, probably in the late 80s.

Why was the Humber Bridge not built as a road AND rail link?

When the Hull & Barnsley Railway was being planned in the nineteenth century, a route away from the existing NER had to be found. A tunnel under the Humber was considered for a while, until the northerly route through the Wolds was chosen.

    Missed connection, what to do?

Alternatively, if you possibly can it would be wise to get an earlier train from Hitchin (18:04 is only 12 minutes earlier or even the 17:46) and allow yourself more connection time. It's better to be kicking your heels for half an hour at Peterborough than risk missing the last train.
