This is the spot on Anglesey where I saw the Wirral, which was visible to the left of the Great Orme. https://maps.app.goo.gl/8XznPgWyP4FGcpua9?g_st=ic On the day that I was there, it was possible to see the high ground leading down to Point of Ayr to left of the Great Orme, with the Wirral...

    Longest line of sight (UK)

Over the last couple of years, I have visited Moelfre on Anglesey and have seen the faint tip of the Wirral peninsula through binoculars, and checking the map it confirmed that the low-lying area visible was indeed Hoylake. It was visible as it contrasted with the higher ground of Prestatyn...

Yes, elevation definitely helps. I’ve heard similar about Anglesey being visible from Crosby beach, and the Great Orme is usually mistaken as Anglesey. From the Lancashire coast at sea level, Anglesey isn’t visible, but from the top of Blackpool Tower it is only just possible to be visible.

    Longest line of sight (UK)

On Twitter, I follow a number of photographer accounts across the north west. A couple of these recently have caught my eye, showing great visibility conditions from Liverpool at sunset. The elevated parts of Liverpool can give some great vistas and lines of sight. This first photo was taken...

Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

I would ban snacks, drinks, and any food in an auditorium (both theatre and cinema). The last time I went to the cinema (about 10 years ago), I found myself in an empty auditorium waiting for the film one quiet Sunday lunchtime. Just before the film started, 2 people arrived and sat down on the...

Food/snacks/drinks you miss and would like back

I‘ve looked for years for their Worcester Sauce crisps and never come across them. They don’t get a mention on the Seabrook website. I will definitely keep an eye out for them in B&M and Home Bargains.

Yes, I had to take a closer look because I thought the hill in the foreground was still part of The Roaches when in fact it’s 6 miles away in Cheshire.
  9. Altrincham

    Longest line of sight (UK)

I have come across a great photograph on Twitter, taken by James Grant, which shows Yr Wyddfa / Snowdon (and the Snowdon Horseshoe) visible from The Roaches in Staffordshire. A distance of 87 miles. Looking closely at the picture, the foreground appears to show The Cloud hill in Cheshire. The...

    Longest line of sight (UK)

In the opposite direction, the Viewfinder Panoramas website entry for Pen y Fan shows that Pilsdon Pen is a line of sight at 79 miles. Looking at the vistas for both locations, there doesn’t seem to be a discernible prominence that would make them stand out when viewed in either direction. But...

TRIVIA: Places with a North, South, East or West prefix that don't have a geographical opposite number

Locally there is a West Timperley but no East Timperley.
  12. Altrincham

    Longest line of sight (UK)

I paid a visit to Prestatyn mountain on Sunday, the day of Rhyl air show. Stopped off at the viewpoint at Gwaenysgor. It’s an impressive vista from the car park, and due west I could make out Anglesey, whilst in a north easterly direction I could see Blackpool Tower sat on the horizon. That’s a...

    Longest line of sight (UK)

There is still a power station at Carrington, which is now gas-powered. Carrington Power Station doesn’t have the prominence to be spotted from the hills around Greater Manchester (it’s fairly low-lying and not a huge presence from a distance), so it’s more likely to be Fiddlers Ferry that’s...
  14. Altrincham

    Longest line of sight (UK)

The power station will be Fiddlers Ferry on the banks of the Mersey. I’m going to miss seeing the cooling towers from long distances as they’ve been quite a feature on the horizon from all directions for as long as I can remember.

    Longest line of sight (UK)

Looking at the viewfinder panorama for Blackpool Tower, I can see that Shining Tor is a line of sight. I would imagine that, in incredible conditions, from Shining Tor it might just be possible to make out the top of Blackpool Tower, but this wouldn’t be as easily spotted as viewing Shining...

    Longest line of sight (UK)

Whenever I’ve been to Blackpool in recent years I now always look out for the Lakes, Isle of Man, and Snowdonia. I’d never thought to look for the lengthy views from the promenade, until one year when I couldn’t believe my eyes when I could see the outline of the Isle of Man.
  17. Altrincham

    Longest line of sight (UK)

That’s a great picture. I always like it when I catch a glimpse of distant structures illuminated, and it’s usually transmitters that I catch sight of. I don’t know this area well and I’m trying to work out what the 2 red lights are, seen to the right of the photo. Is that Thamesport, on the...

Trivia: Retail/food chains that don’t cover the entire UK

Can you remember whereabouts Fine Fare was in Altrincham? It rings a bell. I remember when the area opposite the station and at the lower end of George Street was redeveloped in the mid to late 70’s and the various new shop units were occupied at one time or another by Caters, Prestos, Cordon...

    Natural phenomenon you have witnessed?

On an evening flight from Vancouver back to Heathrow in May 2003 I was sat in a window seat on the left-hand side of the aircraft. The flight left Vancouver around 1800 and the sky was clear and very sunny. A few hours into the flight, as we were heading in a north-easterly direction at quite a...

The transmitter in that picture is the Moel-y-Parc transmitter that’s located on the Clwydian hills. The view is looking west, and Winter Hill would be in the opposite direction behind the photographer.
