    Pre-nationalisation schemes that never happened

Cambrian Railway…if I remember rightly, on the Video125 DEV, the narrator mentioned wanted to build a direct line from Aberystwyth towards Tywyn, avoiding the need to take an inland route via Machynlleth or Dovey Junction, which would have necessitated the building of a timber trestle Bridge...

Merseyrail legacy fleet updates (Class 507/508)

Had a good sweep with various 507s on Wednesday and Thursday, mainly on the Southport line! One observation…noticed several of them seem to have the Rheostatic braking tripped out and seem to be using the Air Brakes, so you don’t get the characteristic sound as the unit pulls into a station!!

    Weird train-related dreams

I was walking from a Park area to “Elm Park” underground station, and crossed a Railway Bridge, expecting it to be the GEML…I could see the District and London-Southend line in the distance, with a connecting spur linking the two. Very quickly a train was approaching…what I expected to be a GA...

Yes! I visited it in June 2021. Good selection of Ales (several local ones!) and Ciders, very friendly service.

Inspired by something I saw on a Facebook group a few months ago… How to make Blackpool look even more dystopian than it is!

Where would you consider the North-South and East-West divides to be within London?

As a South East Londoner, I myself split it all up by Boroughs! Lewisham, Greenwich, Bromley and Bexley are very much South East London. Southwark (most of*), Lambeth, and Croydon are most definitely South London…but the tricky one is Wandsworth, it has areas that would be classed as South...

    Now Playing....

Sunrise (Low Life 1985) and Vanishing Point (Technique 1989) qualify very much in that category!! The latter very nearly got released as a single, but New Order chose to release Fine Time instead.

    Night Mail 1988

Transport Video Publishing (TVP) produced “Aerial Voyage” in the early 1990s, using stock footage from the British Rail concerto ad. So you get to see (with studio music and a bit of narration…) things like *HST crossing the Royal Albert Bridge then heading over the Devon Banks *NSE Thameslink...

Things the younger generation wouldn’t believe when you were a kid

Listening to a Storytape on long car journeys. Depending how good the car’s Tapedeck was…you either had to eject the tape and turn it over yourself…or the tapedeck could read both sides!! Quite often we had on in the car a couple of Babar the Elephant stories, Ivor the Engine, The Bear, a...

Things the younger generation wouldn’t believe when you were a kid

In Dundee where my Grandparents lived, the local buses operated by Strathtay Scottish still had Conductors well into the 21st century…even after Yorkshire Traction was bought out by Stagecoach in 2005/6! So quite possibly the Strathtay Conductors outlived London one’s (barring the 9 and 15...

Things the younger generation wouldn’t believe when you were a kid

Expanding on that…my Grandparents were quite old fashioned with their phone answering. Both would answer the phone quoting the Phone Number (minus the Area Code)…that’s something that just died out with the generations!

    Walking and Rambling discussion

This Saturday just gone, while staying in Newport South Wales…I walked to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain overlooking Abergavenny. Not to be confused with the one overlooking the Heart of Wales Line! The weather was initially quite miserable first thing…I nearly didn’t bother going…but it...

Rationale behind which routes crew at a given depot sign

The 442s on the Brighton Mainline had a Guard onboard either all the way from London Bridge or Gatwick Airport if they were calling at the intermediate stations South of Haywards Heath. The Victoria-Gatwick-Brighton non stop expresses (or the former Victoria-Brighton fasts that called only at...

Which services did the class 319's run when under Southern?

The Connex Crèche incidentally I remember being mentioned on the then BBC Regional News programme “Newsroom South East” back in 2001. The idea behind it was for Commuters who were stuck for childcare options, could take their children to London Victoria…presumably as it was a Connex...
