    Caledonian Sleeper discussion

Saw the tail end leaving over the bridge at Wigan North Western and wondered if I was seeing things, that's quite a delay.

Most ridiculous or inappropriate food you've seen being eaten on a train

The chap and his wife who took the trouble to take plates, and a cheese knife with them so they could eat their cheese and biscuits in the correct fashion on a Merseyrail train a couple of months ago was peculiar.

Second PUT at Freshfield in 6 days

Ah, sorry I've misread "near" as "at", initial reports yesterday said it was at the crossing. I assume confusion has come about because that was used as nearest access point to the scene by emergency services.

Second PUT at Freshfield in 6 days

Most of info known about first incident Second incident Speculation is the second was a suicide, obviously that's subject to further investigation and coroner verdict. Suspect it's just coincidence that they've occurred so close to each other (unless press coverage of the first...

    Southport line to be renewed

I have only ever heard of flooding "in the Parbold area" on announcements when there has been flood disruption. The line across the moss doesn't seem to suffer from it (or hasn't in the last 4 years I've been paying attention to it). I thought this...

    Southport line to be renewed

There have been a couple of week long blockades in last couple of years, but they've been the whole line Southport to Wigan rather than just to Parbold. Certainly sections of the line are noticeably quieter and less bouncy than others now, it used to be like a wooden rollercoaster throughout...

    Southport line to be renewed

Would make more sense if the realignment was for the section through what used to be St Lukes station which still clearly diverges for an island platform that's long gone. Location here: http://goo.gl/maps/8Ij4A What's the rumoured change at Meols Cop?

    Funny Guard Announcements.

Just now on the Manchester - Southport train: "First class towards the front of the train... Cheap seats at the rear." Front unit a 150, rear unit a 142 :D. No idea if it started as a mistake but either way fantastic!

    Southport-Manchester (via Liverpool)

Apparently it's also valid via Hunts Cross I was told yesterday at the station, so as long as Merseyrail are fine with me pootling up and down the Southport-Hunts Cross stretch on the Northern Line on it, it's good enough for me.

    Southport-Manchester (via Liverpool)

Just to report back, checked with station staff and guard on Merseyrail before boarding, all told me valid via Liverpool.

    Southport-Manchester (via Liverpool)

Thanks for the quick reply! I have no doubt the reasons why this long way round is valid are a bit complicated, it seems to make little sense, but if it saves me a few quid buying Southport-Liverpool-Manchester tickets for the outward journey tomorrow I'll take it!

    Southport-Manchester (via Liverpool)

Hi all, I've read in various places that a Southport-Manchester Stns ticket is valid via Liverpool. Is this correct, and does it mean I can do Southport-Liverpool and back again on a Southport-Manchester Stations season ticket (Or Southport-Liverpool-Manchester-Southport which would be...

    Level crossing/foot crossing stations

Bromley Cross on the Bolton-Blackburn line is like this, with a gate which I assume is controlled from the signalbox to stop people accessing it when trains are there.

"Near miss at Burscough railway crossing"

http://www.qlocal.co.uk/southport/news_list/Near_miss_at_Burscough_railway_crossing-51774508.htm Don't know how many people use the road but as I regularly use the railway over that crossing it's something of a relief if they keep having near misses!

First win Intercity West Coast franchise

Just had a thought - are Virgin going to run their units into the ground before hand over in hope of First inheriting a half-broken fleet so Beardie can point at them and go "A-hah! Told you so!" when they run into reliability issues? *dons tin-foil hat*

    Funny Guard Announcements.

I got on a VT terminating at Lancaster at Preston and as we were halfway there the TM announced we'd soon be arriving at Carlisle, then burst out laughing and corrected himself.
