    What car should I buy?

I tend to add my parents (70 and 71). They live in Plymouth and I live in North Tyneside but it reduces the premium by a fair bit. I do put their home address down to make it clear they don't live here but it still seems to work. You could also add friends or housemates depending on your...

Embarrassing things you’ve done while travelling by train

A chap I know* was visiting his friend in Birmingham in the early 70s and got on the wrong train, heading North East towards Darlington rather than South West towards Bodmin. This was his first real trip away from Cornwall so he was a little concerned. Realising his mistake he struck up a...

    Buying cars online

I've picked up three cars this way, two Vauxhall Vectras' and an Audi A6. The latter was from Cazoo back in 2020, the other two were from Black Horse via a portal at work. It turned up on the back of a lorry and the lass that delivered it talked me through how it worked. The first two never...

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class service

A wee bit of silverlining, I'm on the 07:43 off Newcastle this morning and an additional menu card has appeared... I can confirm the items do exist.

CrossCountry Advance Fares - Lack of?

From memory, if going from Edinburgh direct split at: Edinburgh - Newcastle Newcastle - York York - Sheffield Sheffield - Derby - the off peak return is sometimes cheaper than the advance single Derby - Birmingham New Street Birmingham NS - Cheltenham Spa Cheltenham Spa - Bristol Temple Meads...

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class service

I’d be a little more wary. The last time they did a similar survey they used it to justify the removal of the first class quiet coach as it apparently came “last” in the reasons people said they travelled in first rather than standard.

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class service

Interesting that they seem to have gone with whiskey (Jameson's?), given they serve Scotland. My colleagues in Edinburgh won't be impressed. On the "food" front I'd rather they just binned it off rather than carrying on like this. Even National Express had a better offer, albeit paid for.

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class service

Good luck, I haven't had a "substantial meal" on an east coast mainline service since early 2011 due to the constant downgrading of the catering by each operator since then....

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class service

I find the head cushion pushes my neck out at a strange angle, but by removing it and using as a "booster cushion" it lessens both the hard seat and neck issue. They're only held on with a strip of velcro so fairly easy to do. Just have to make sure to put it back when alighting.

Teesside to Plymouth, returning via Croydon & Chester

In the past in pre-covid-19 times when I’ve travelled from Plymouth back to Newcastle the following splits have knocked a large amount off the ticket, so basically reverse it and omit bits you don’t need if going direct: Plymouth – Exeter Exeter – Bristol Temple M Bristol Temple M – Cheltenham...

    Your first car

Passed in 1997. First car was a blue 1987 Ford Escort Popular which even then was more rust than metal, only had a 4 speed gearbox and a manual choke. Was replaced with a 1993 purple Vauxhall Cavaliar that was owned by an ex girlfriends parents. I still miss that car.... It was, sadly...

    LNER Perks

Seems a bit “meh” to me. The percentage seems the same as Nectar Points (2 points for £1). Whilst at least I can collect those at multiple outlets and with offers I regularly collect 5,000 - 10,000 of them a month to convert those into Ebay vouchers or spend them in Sainsbury’s, this is tied...

    Coronavirus restrictions postcode look up?

Pop your postcode into: https://www.writetothem.com/ and it'll tell you which ward and authority area you're in. Can't argue with the need for a postcode lookup, but I think the chance of something so useful actually happening is probably zero.

How about this? It was an FOI response (not mine).

Worst experiences after taking the wrong train

None of these were really bad, just amusing: Just before starting a job in Stevenage it was suggested I popped down a few weeks before starting to meet people. Frist job out of university and all paid for, so I agreed. came down from where I was living in Leicester no problem. Got on the wrong...

LNER - no more Nectar points on purchases

This would explain the "Customer Panel" questions about Nectar points and the desire for feedback on a 2% replacement scheme some months ago. Interesting that they seem to have abandoned it as the final scheme, which is counter to the indications that were given online. Hopefully it was not...

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class service

I wouldn’t get excited by the “Beef in Yorkshire Pudding”. I’m regretting not picking up those Aunt Bessie’s shares tbh....
