Worst damage to a locomotive sustained while hauling a railtour?

Not UK but as they're cross border I suppose it counts. Railway Preservation Society of Ireland loco 85 dropped a fusible plug at Gorey, ROI, on a passenger run in July 2019. As I understand it, the fire service had to hose 85 down as a safety precaution. There was a similar incident in the 80s...

    Leeds/Bradford airport to Skipton

Thanks for that. I'm travelling Thursday and Saturday but would rather stick to rail as much as possible, never having travelled these lines before. Last time I was in Skipton was in the 80s and I arrived by narrowboat.

    Leeds/Bradford airport to Skipton

I tried searching here for advice on a trip from Leeds/Bradford airport to Skipton but was unsuccessful or missed it. I'm visiting the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway this month and I'm trying to work out the easiest way to get there. Am I right in thinking a taxi to Apperley Bridge followed by a...

    Trackside vegetation on preserved lines

At Downpatrick & County Down Railway, we have a ballast regulator which doubles as the weed sprayer and has a tank and spray attachments permanently fitted. For bigger jobs, we did have an ex-NIR hedge cutter but since it's death, we invested in a flail which is used by one of our road/rail...

Irish Traction Group diesel gala - Saturday 12th October

It's been a while since the Irish Traction Group last ran a diesel gala, which didn't quite go to plan on the day, but we thought we'd put that one behind us and take another chance, so we're pleased to announce our next gala will take place at Downpatrick & County Down Railway on Saturday 12th...

    NIR DEMUs move to preservation

23 June sees the 80 class carry out its first move in preservation during driver training, all accompanied by that familiar thump and a fair bit of clag.

    NIR DEMUs move to preservation

Last month saw the arrival of a couple of power cars and driving trailers from the NIR 80 Class at the Downpatrick & County Down Railway. One of the sets, power car 69 and driving trailer 749 have been repainted by NI Railways into the original maroon and blue livery. Image below by M Young...

Complete list of Britain`s Preserved Railways

Just a minor change. I see you have Downpatrick & County Down Railway preservation society of Ireland. It should just read Downpatrick & County Down Railway. The RPSI operate mainland steam trips and aren't a preserved line as such, though their Whitehead Railway Museum does offer trips up...

Cheapest car ferry to (Northern) Ireland

There's also a Liverpool to Belfast option to consider however, if it's just after Christmas when you're travelling, expect fares to be higher than other times of the year no matter which route you sail on. If you can sail at the most inconvenient times, i.e. the middle of the night, it'll be...

Guards uniform for a pres line

I've picked up a couple of the 70s style jackets from eBay and wear one of them for my guard's turns at the line I volunteer at, though I've replaced the buttons. Such heresy! Unused jackets are often advertised though the biggest problem is getting one that fits. Most of those I've seen are...

    GNER dinnerware

Managed to get wine glasses from eBay but that's about it. Will try Weardale. Many thanks.

Type 1 Diabetes on the footplate.

Haha! Even if I could get a job on the real railway here, the top mainline speed is somewhat shy of 125mph. I have to remain content with 15 for the time being.

Type 1 Diabetes on the footplate.

If they're anything like the line I work on, you'll probably find they have a requirement for a medical for anyone working in safety critical positions. Generally, it's very similar to that required by HGV drivers and is either done by a suitably qualified medical officer or GP.

    GNER dinnerware

I haven't seen this mentioned before but apologies if it's something I've missed. A couple of years ago, I came across a website selling unused GNER dinnerware but I can't seem to find it now. Is the website still in operation and if so, what's the address? Thanks.

    Carriage PA system

Thanks for further suggestions. All more food for thought. I've managed to locate salvaged speakers from an NIR 450 class unit. More than I'll ever need. As to necessity, as our carriages are non-corridor (although they have connectors, they don't match up) and it would be very useful to...

    Carriage PA system

Cheers for the offer though in this case, the budget will be minimal. I think I may have speakers recovered from an old 450 class so if it goes ahead, it's going to be a Frankenstien's monster affair.

    Carriage PA system

Very much appreciated. Thanks for the info. I've used Thomann before for musical gear and they're very good. --- old post above --- --- new post below --- That's a possibility I hadn't thought of. There's a small amount of redundant stock around which may provide useful.

No problem. Downpatrick & County Down Railway.

    Carriage PA system

Thanks for the response. I suppose it's easiest to answer in order. Budget? - At present unknown though if approved, it will be low end. How often are carriages reformed? - Not too often. More common that one carriage comes off the running set for maintenance. Does it need to look...
