All seat reservations activate part-way through GWR journey

A common cause for this is the train has to download the seat reservation data. It happens when the system fails to download. It is possible the ‘data’ was downloaded later.

    GWR Coupling Hatches

As someone said, they are for aesthetics. The only restriction would be if the train was given a ‘non multi’ notice. There’s no need for a driver to decline coupling with it isolated open. Also it doesn’t affect performance of the train when open. The assembly of the coupler is virtually the...

Trainee Train Driver - Heathrow Express (Talent Pool) 08/07/2022

In rules they don’t cover level crossing or AB. So it’s more of a conversion for them. (Hex) When a driver starts GWR, (mainline) They cover everything. If a driver goes on a 387/800 conversion course then a refresh and re-assessment of AC is done.

Trainee Train Driver - Heathrow Express (Talent Pool) 08/07/2022

Unless the training has changed for them? I’m going off guys that have moved from HX to GWR. It’s likely the training is standardised now. So they probably do the full course a GWR driver will do. Including AC/DC and absolute block. However once learnt, come rules day you’re only assessed on...

Trainee Train Driver - Heathrow Express (Talent Pool) 08/07/2022

Correct. They also have to learn DC module (as this gets added to the license counterpart) however this would be depot specific as far as I’m aware. For instance, transferring to Reading or Padd (GWR) Plus they get an update on token/single line working. Everything else is covered on a...

Trainee Train Driver - Heathrow Express (Talent Pool) 08/07/2022

After serving 2yrs productive-Qualified, you can PT&R to another depot. That is subject to a vacancy being available at the chosen depot. Also the move can take longer now as there are other drivers on the lists. (Both Hex and GWR) Since harmonisation, moves are not as common. So depots are...

GWR AM Peak new class 800 IET diagram

To further add, even if the cameras don’t work, degraded dispatch isn’t safe or practical. Due to the way the 800 doors close. (The passenger doors don’t sit flush along the body side of the train) unlike a turbo or 387 As to answer why a Worcester always runs with a guard, that’s due to a HSS...

Different Driver Depot, Route and Traction cards

Update for GWR: Swindon sign 800 (although going through the process to train drivers up) Paddington GWR is commencing Cardiff. This is link dependent, with route learning to be done by May. (Technically in a link 0, same with Bristols. As link 1 don’t sign Bristol. It’s a link called ‘dynamic’.)

LNER - Apprentice Driver - Kings Cross & Leeds (06/01/22)

What is your spare agreement? I’m guessing they can change your shifts drastically? For instance an original booked turn was 13:00 till 21:30. But moving you at short notice and huge time variations. So from 13:00, a change to 0800?

Is train driving considered a skilled or semi skilled profession?

Neither. Everyone I talk to seems to think we’re always on strike

    RSSB Rule Book App log-in.

You wouldn’t be making any point, because that’s what you’re suppose to do. That also includes looking at route maps, notices, ARB, sectional apx and even Wons for clarification. I’ve delayed many trains looking at my route maps and if asked regarding delay, concluded with “ah ok” and left...

Avanti West Coast - QUALIFIED Drivers - Euston & Wolves (29/07/21)

Totally agree! I know someone who joined Avanti just before covid. They’ve done the traction course but still waiting to learn routes! You maybe on that pay cut for a lot longer than you think…as we know, nothing moves fast on the railway…

    Triangle sign

Is it this one? It means ‘rear clear’. It means the rear of your train is clear of the signal/ground position signal, neutral section or it can be used in a platform that would have an A or a B end. (For permissive working) The GWML has them everywhere! A typical use of this is: a train would...

Best place to drive out of London

Totally agree! It’s not always buckets and spades down there. I prefer London for the nightlife, store availability/opening hours, later/earlier transport. The coast isn’t that far either from the city by road or rail. Drivers whinge about branch line work in the Thames Valley, yet transfer to...

GWR Reading Station shift patterns and routes 2021

As JN114 states, there is no cake and eat it sadly. As he also states, we are responsible for getting to/from work. The 1:30hr commute isn’t bad but outweigh that with his workload at HX. I say it balances things out. If he wants the straight forward commute but doesn’t care about the work...

GWR Reading Station shift patterns and routes 2021

I wouldn’t say it’s hard, it’s just a lot of work when other depots do less. It gets a lot of work because of where it’s located and the main depot for storing suburban trains is there. It’s not a bad depot as it offers a large variety of work. In the train driving world there are depots that...

GWR Reading Station shift patterns and routes 2021

Yes there are breaks in between the longest. After all you can only be driving for 5hrs max. He can PTR (transfer) to Reading (at 4yrs experience, if there’s a vacancy he’ll be inline with link 3) If he uses the PTR move, he won’t get another shot. IE if you both decide to relocate to...

GWR Reading Station shift patterns and routes 2021

    - shift pattern is something like: Weds/thurs off then the following week you’ll have fri-Tues off. Following week Weds/thurs…and so on - Sunday’s are not part of the week. However you work 2 Sundays and have 2 Sundays off. (One as mentioned above is in the long weekend) - Shifts are generally...

    London Depot commute

You can also park on a single yellow line after 6:30. Some drivers cycle to work. Although most that I know still drive. The commute at the end (on early) or commute at the start can take those living in a London Borough longer to travel than someone who lives in a home county. Drivers also...
