Visiting the Normandy beaches without a car - is it practical?

I have actually wanted to do the same thing for years, might get round to it soon. Don't fancy driving on the 'wrong side of the road' so it would be public transport probably. Thanks for the thread, interesting stuff.

Flight Tracking Services - Interesting Observations

An unusual visitor to Newcastle today was a Saudia 787 bringing the Newcastle United team back from training in Saudi Arabia during the World Cup break. This was also the no.1 tracked flight at the time of landing. Emirates is the usual Middle East visitor to NCL with their flights to Dubai...

Hong Kong MTR derailed at Yau Ma Tei Station

Its the way MTR do things to make it less 'bad'. Its an underground station so grazed the platform edge rather than the tunnel wall but it couldn't go far either side. All fixed this morning and back to normal operation.

Closed lines you have travelled on.

Not much for me but only the old line at Penmanshiel, the Leamside line many times during the ECML electrification with diverted HSTs, old line via Scotswood to Blaydon and the old lines through Manors on the Tyne loop. Probably done the old alignment on the South Shields line too at some point.

HK MTR Derails Tsuen Wan line train towards Central derailed at Yau Ma Tei station on Sunday morning HK time causing the train to strike the platform edge and ripped of several sets of doors. Some passengers were evacuated via the station, some via the rear of the train back up to Mong Kok...

    Transpennine woes and a moan...

In my tweets to TPE I did add a hashtag for Look North so they were aware of these consecutive cancellations on the Scarborough line (if they check Tweets of course), doubt this was the reason it was included today but glad the cancellations are getting more publicity.

    Transpennine woes and a moan...

Surely if you have an advance ticket, or any ticket with/without reservation, irrespective of whether the journey is cancelled at 2200 or 1000 then if your scheduled and possibly reserved journey is delayed then you can claim delay repay? Do they just fob people off and expect them to go away ...

I wouldn't trust them to get the fans TO the game, never mind back from it.

    Transpennine woes and a moan...

On the subject of delay repay on TPE, yesterday 27/10/2022 was a return trip to London from Scarborough and the return portion of the trip from York to Scarborough was farcical. On the 1800 LNER train from KGX, which ran to time and arrived into York around 1947, I checked the live times of the...

What is the Covid-19 Exit Strategy of 'Zero Covid' countries such as Hong Kong?

Having lived in Hong Kong during their zero-Covid policy, escaping in early 2022, I do still watch what goes on there and still can't see any way out of this for them unless China allows them to change. The new Chief Executive and his team is no better than calamity Carrie and her minions. It is...

Closest settlement you've never been to.

From Newcastle, nearest larger settlement would be Peterlee for me. Or as a suburb then most parts of Sunderland.

Covid restrictions abroad: updates & observations

I recently returned from a trip back to Asia, taking in Singapore and Philippines via Doha with Qatar Airways and then Scoot from SG. Masks were required to be worn on all of the flights except when eating or drinking, this was enforced more on Scoot than QR. In airports, it was not enforced...

Flight Tracking Services - Interesting Observations

Japan Airlines from Tokyo to London yesterday 10th Sept, JL43, had to hold over NW Scotland at FL370 for about 20 minutes, must have been very early as after holding it still arrived 1 hour early. Interesting following these flights now since they do not fly over Russia but over Alaska, Northern...

    Barrow-in-Furness to Euston Sleepers c1987-1990

There is a 1965/66 TT on Timetable World so a bit earlier than 1968 but might give general idea of what went on back then.

    Fuel price Motorway protests

Having recently bought a car as I had big plans for the summer, I'm somewhat in a quandary now as to when and how to use it. Sunday I wanted to go to York, (currently living near Scarborough) just for the day and after reviewing the costs involved decided thus: It's about an 100 mile round trip...

Steve Wright to leave Radio 2 Afternoon.

Steve Wright was a breath of fresh air when he hit the Radio 1 airwaves, at least to me anyway. Being brought up on Radio 1 when it was the station to listen to I've kind of grown with some of the DJ's migrating to Radio2. One day, (couple or 5 years ago?) whilst out driving there was Simon...

    Unusual Diversions.

During the ECML electrification, Sunday mornings were always fun to explore diversionary routes. There was a map in Newcastle Station, (others too of course) with that weekends diversionary routes filled in on a simplified ECML drawing. Wednesday was usually decision day as to where I would go...

    Transpennine woes and a moan...

As a fairly regular user of the TPE services York to Scarborough in the past few weeks I'd say the service is shoddy at the best of times with cancellations making it a lucky dip of your train actually runs or not. Non strike day schedules meant the service was badly affected but don't think...
