Improving local transport around Newburgh, Fife - Possibility of reopening station

I was linked to a set of proposals for improving public transport around Newburgh, Fife. One proposal is to reopen the railway station, located on the line between Perth and Ladybank, which sees services between Inverness and Edinburgh via Inverkeithing...

GWR Delay compensation: poor adhesion not a valid criterion?

I recently had a delay repay claim to GWR rejected. The cause of the delay was extremely poor adhesion from my starting point of Newbury, causing me to miss a connecting train at Reading. GWR have rejected my claim because: However, according to the GWR Compensation for Delays form, this is...

Sat 14th Oct: Hereford - Swansea via Oxford and Gloucester HST

This is interesting. Emergency engineering work seems to have been planned for this Saturday at Reading. The first departure from Hereford to Paddington has instead been diverted to Swansea, via Gloucester! http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/V07308/2017/10/14/advanced I'm sure this working...

    Funny bug with GWR wifi

It seems that you can't connect to GWR wifi unless you specifically don't agree to the T&Cs. Has anyone else experience this little bug?

    Cross-London transfer times

Does anyone know where I can find the latest cross-london transfer times? I can't find them in the latest Network Rail national timetable. I'm only interested in Kings Cross - Marylebone and Kings Cross - Waterloo, but it'd be useful if someone could write the times here so that others don't...

Highland mainline closure - VTEC arrangements?

I understand that the highland mainline is closed between Pitlochry and Dunkeld due to flooding, and that the Highland Chieftain will have to start/terminate at Perth, with a connecting bus for passengers further north. My question is regarding ECS arrangements for this working. I assume...

Transport for London 'should control trains', City Hall report says

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-34541576 The implication seems to be that "TfL know what they're doing, so put them in charge", although aren't the problems with service reliability largely down to Network Rail and the various ongoing upgrades?

Network Rail privatisation "on the table"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-34276868 I don't think it matters where NR's debt is moved to. It will be the general public who ultimately have to pay for it, either through the farebox or subsidy. Is this just another number fudging exercise?

Summer Saturday Eastbourne 442 trip report

I decided to go on a trip with fellow RailUK member Muzer on the summer saturday Eastbourne express service, worked by a class 442. Starting from Southampton we were sadly not able to catch the morning working from Eastbourne to London, however with our Daysave rovers we intended to catch the...

    Thames Travel poor reliability?

I am travelling from reading to Harwell each day this week, catching a first great western service to Didcot, and then a Thames travel bus to Harwell campus. On both days so far, the X1/X32 buses have been late (at least 30 minutes behind schedule). Am I just having bad luck, or are they always...

Cumbrian Mountain Express, Buffer Puffer, Chiltern Champion and C stock

Despite the awful weather predictions, it was a rather lovely weekend in places! Saturday 8th February: Starting off at Euston with 47850 and 86259 on the Cumbrian Mountain Express. Next, we have the Buffer Puffer 11.1 at Blackfriars. We then travelled on C stock on the Wimbleware...

Reopening of Fawley branch to passengers: plans shelved

More here. Personally I think this is a great shame. My understanding was the largest objection to reopening the line for passengers was from DBS who use the line for access to the Fawley oil terminal and Marchwood military port, but that isn't mentioned in the report at all.

XC: Turbostar covering for Voyager (and visa versa?)

I'm currently on an XC service from Manchester Piccadilly to Southampton, which is formed of 170117 and '113 instead of a Voyager. This is due to a fatality at Fenny Compton, and we'll be turfed off at Birmingham New Street onto a connecting train to Southampton. Have 170s worked to...

Manchester - Southampton Sunday 12th January

Hi all, I would like to find the cheapest way of heading from Manchester to Southampton on 12th January, in the evening preferably. An advance single on the 1827 XC departure is £50.40 without a railcard. I have tried splitting at different points and have so far found that splitting at...

Tube challenge attempt 20th December 2013

Muzer, a fellow member of RailUK, and I decided to attempt the tube challenge on the 20th December. We chose this date because it was a weekday (with good service and no engineering works) but the Kensington Olympia shuttle was also running all day (which doesn't normally happen on weekdays...

    Another year, another fare rise

It's that time of year again. Well, not just yet: BBC: Commuters will find out later how much rail fares are to go up next year when inflation figures are released. The article has all the usual ingredients: a union representative calling for renationalisation, a passenger's opinion and the...

A day in Paris: what's worth seeing?

I'm considering spending a day in Paris before the end of summer, and I'm trying to decide what to do. I'm interested in seeing loco hauled trains, especially push-pull sets which I believe are still used in France. I'm also interested in freight. Apart from the main terminals, are there...

Evening peak restrictions: Should they be like the morning peak?

I overheard a (somewhat tipsy!) passenger on a train this evening saying that leisure travellers shouldn't be allowed to travel in the evening peak because regular commuters pay a higher fare. I know there are already restrictions on super off-peak fares from some London terminals, but do people...

    DRS 37s to Winfrith

Has anyone else on here seen the train from Crewe to Winfrith today? I saw it at Totton this morning. It was booked to pass through non-stop, but it was running early and got put in the loop next to the station. The weather was gloomy but I managed to get a picture of it. Anyone who hasn't...

Southampton Airport Parkway to Kings Langley best fare option?

One of my housemates is going from Southampton Airport to Kings Langley soon, and he has asked me how he can do this as cheaply as possible. He has a railcard and an Oyster card. His journey will be as follows: Friday: Southampton - Kings Langley (arr 0930 approx) Kings Langley - London...
