Could a train be built for Portsmouth to Waterloo services that commuters like?

What used to be done twenty of so years ago was to not stop at Pompey Fasts at woking encouraging woking people to Pompey slows which are typically less packed. The popular 6.37 from havant (now 6.34) didn't even used to stop at guildford ... let alone woking. It's a bit difficult for...

Southern Rail peak time service to Guildford what stock?

Some memories from a couple of years back. The 0722/0723 used to be the 0724 (or was it 0728) used to be a 2 x 4 car 377. Very civilised train it was too leaving Guildford platform 1. It made an appear in he metro 'love crush' so i used to thnk of it as the love express as it runs 'fast'...

Could a train be built for Portsmouth to Waterloo services that commuters like?

Not to mention heavyweight shoes that didnt give up or weld themselves to a rail like a 442 or 450/444/377. Well I remember an early morning train in the early nineties that was a 442 until the snow/ice got bad .... the 442's got ditched for some 4-cep's and those 4-ceps never left ... to be...

Could a train be built for Portsmouth to Waterloo services that commuters like?

A couple more features: The trains on the Pompey direct to Waterloo fill faster at the front rather than the rear. So one can often and easily have standing at the front while there is still plently of seating in the rear. Regulars tend to know this and know how far back they will *usually*...

Could a train be built for Portsmouth to Waterloo services that commuters like?

If you look at the morning journey times from havant ... which have been creeping longer and longer and longer since the early BR days ... we currently have: 04:51 Havant [HAV] London Waterloo [WAT] 06:29 1h 38m 05:40 Havant [HAV] London Waterloo [WAT] 07:12 1h 32m 06:11 Havant [HAV] London...

Could a train be built for Portsmouth to Waterloo services that commuters like?

In my opinion the major problem with the 450 is: - 5 a side seating .... Often 5 a side seats means only 2 sit on the '3' seat and it is a better option to stand rather than squeeze in. .... If switched to 4 a side (ideally with armrests!) then you do lose a few seats but you gain with...

Should the class 60 be fully restored to frontline service?

There is always the possibility i suppose that the 60's may suffer from other factors such as high track wear; vibration; rough riding; high component wear should the higher speed be sanctioned. Those 60's now out of service will require the 'super 60' treatment to make them ready again...

Is the Class 66 the black 5 of Diesel locomotives?

I'd be thinking of a class 66 as more of a LMS Stanier 8F or BR standard 9F because of the freight orientation. The comparison becomes convoluted wrt passenger working :: arguments might bring in thoughts of the class 66 'cousin' the CIE 201(ii) class ... and the fact 8F as apparently...

Will corridor carriages ever come back to our railways?

The original wood veenered 4-[bc]eps 7001/2+7101-4 did have the odd table in the corridored mid coaches if i recall correctly ... even in 2nd ... they were removable thus probably got removed! But they were rare! Of course these doubled as a poor mans sleeper when lightly loaded, .. though...

Train derailed at Sheffield (4 April 2015)

Probably was fitted with derailleur then  (Assume hopefully no one injured).

Class 24 and 25 diesel locos

Just slightly off topic my understanding is that with the (scottish) class 26/27 cousins of the class 24/25 it was the class 26 that survived longer (1993) than the class 27 (1987). This was due to the higher reliability of the lower powered engine (at least according to wikipedia for class 27)...

Sutton to Dorking - what is the rolling stock?

Probably doesn't helpyou much, but the following occurs to me: The SWT 450 desiro seem to me to be much more roomy than a Class 377. In both class 377, 450 and 444 the space near the wheelchair accessible area will probably feel the roomiest with a large space. These will be in the center...

Sutton to Dorking - what is the rolling stock?

If its of any help the SWT from epsom to Dorking are likely to be 455's with hopper windows. So a change an epsom may help your cause. I haven't been that way for a while so I can't really say for certain. If you do that don't get a southern only ticket.

    Most 'endangered' units/locos?

Class 86 could be at risk .... (displaced by 90's) though they do still to be effective and may carry on for more years yet.

    Class 60 Reinstatement?

If you haven't seen it earlier thread http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?p=1973674 is worth a read. As a rule of thumb pretty with the odd exception well any class 60 now operational has gone throw the "super 60" overhaul program. Those that are non operational would need to go...

Services which could realistically return to Loco Haulage

Can't see 88's. At a stretch The new 73/9's + 4 coaches just might fit brighton/pompey to Bristol if 158's needed to be freed up. But logistics, owners etc might prove an issue. If I remember the route has some steep gradients between cosham and Southampton ... 3h's used to chugg up them...

Services which could realistically return to Loco Haulage

As I understand it we currently have a shortfall in non-electrified route passenger capacity. We have no DMU capacity to gill the gap. There is a reluctance to build more DMU's as some will be freed up by electrifications shortly .. and then we would have a surplus of DMU's and that would have...

Trains that currently run ECS that may be useful services

The early morning 6am from(ish) from guildford to newcastle generally is ecs from eastleigh via havant and would provide a great early morning opportunity if it stopped at fareham / havant / petersfield ... as everything else at the time is a (very) slow stopper. (It might also give a...
