Question about a trip to the Arctic - time of year

Looking at various options for a trip to the Arctic Circle. Does anybody have experience doing it over the winter months? Looking to combine 'snow', Sleepers, etc, with at least some day light hours. All thoughts welcome, but please, not speculation. TIA.

    Anytime not [appearing] meaning Anytime??

I'm looking at Welwyn North to Gatwick in Jan for my mum (hence the Senior Railcard). I am offered an Anytime Return for £32.70 but suggests it can't be used on early morning return services. 09.19 is the first offered train. There is a second Anytime Return for £49.60 where earlier timed...

Love this.... 1W16 today (16/2) King's Cross to Inverness

Left King's Cross, 12 late on a tight 4h22m timing to Edinburgh. Lost more time and got as far back as 17 down by Huntington. It's just reached Edinburgh only 1 late. Very impressive.

Over run a platform at Stevenage this morning? (25/01/2023)

Did 1A09 (07.15 ex Leeds to Kings Cross) over run Stevenage this morning? RTT shows it passing Stevenage at 09.05, and OTT shows it stopped at the next block (is that what they're called?). It's now back in the platform, presumably having reversed. I hope it was a mistake and not an incident -...

    Stevenage to Newcastle routing/pricing question

Can a return ticket be used from Stevenage to Newcastle travelling via Leeds on the outbound? If yes, how long can the 'break' be in Leeds? I understand (I think) that if I arrive in Leeds after the last train to Newcastle has left I can stay overnight and resume the next day. Can I stay longer...

Approaching Finsbury Park on the Up...

Most Thameslink services (9***) approaching Finsbury Park in the Up direction typically use the Up Fast until reaching the junction just past signal K392, switching to the Up Slow. My question relates to the approach speed which I think (from a lay person) is far too defensive/restrictive. I...

1979 request - London to Cornwall in August

I’m looking for a 1979 summer saturday (August) timetable for London to Cornwall. We travelled as a family to friends near Liskeard and I’m sure we used an HST; just looking for some confirmation. TIA

    Stevenage to Victoria Peak travel

For a 21 year old part time student needing to travel 2 days per week... The cheapest ticket I can find is a Stevenage to Victoria Peak Return @ £19.70 with a 16-25 Rail Card. From what I can see a Stevenage to Kings Cross, plus the return tubes, costs £20.75 (16-25 RC) [15.75+2.50+2.50] Also...

What am I missing... Std v 1st Class

Hi all, Stevenage to Reading, £40.50 Off Peak return, is, in my view, good value. About 90 mins for what can be a 2+ hour drive. However, I considered going 1st class. I thought the general rule of thumb was Std + 50% and at £60ish I might have been tempted. However, with only an Anytime Day...

King's Cross Northern Line lifts emergency exit

Hi All, Where does the escape route take you too, please? The one accessed from the mid point of the Northern Line public lift. I'm aware there's a (non-public) lift from the platforms to street level, which I presume uses the original shafts, and I also presume there are (non-public stairs)...

    GWR change of service

Hi All, Just found out my direct Paddington to Penzance train (21/7 1C76) is stopping short at Plymouth, followed by a change on to 2C24 which shows as a Class 158/168/170/175 . Anybody know if the London train will be 5, 9 or 10 coaches. And will the Penzance train be an IET and only timed as...

Advice please. 35mm slides to digital

Hi All, Not rail related unfortunately, but I do have a number (approx 100) of 35mm colour slides (c. 1969) that I'd like to convert. During this lockdown period all our local shops are closed. Any advice on which companies I can use. I'm really concerned about the slides being 'lost in the...

Congestion - a problem called Welwyn

Here are my ideas to fix the problem, with some consideration for costs and planning permission. 1) Hertford Loop - 4 slow per hour. ALL 4 stop at Gordon Hill to allow a FAST service through. They stop again at Hertford to allow the next FAST through. The 4 FAST services would be the...

Side corridor or brake coaches in Mk3s?

Hi All, Mk 1 and 2 coaches all had a variant that included a corridor version. Did any of the Mk 3 coaches include this option. Or indeed a brake version. I know of a Mk 3 variant that had a corridor version, but I can't think of a brake. Edinburgh > Glasgow push pulls maybe?
