In the next 5 to 10 years it's planned to knock the Littlewoods building down and replace it with a glass building and create a new square in front of this new main entrance, so I'd imagine that the platform level can be redesigned when they upgrade the platforms back to 4 lines, I imagine that...
I was waiting outside of Euston Train station waiting for my grown up kids coming down from the hotel opposite, an Italian couple asked me a few questions, I politely answered them the best I could, next thing I noticed that I had a queue of three other couples wanting similar advice, I felt as...
Could they not increase the line speed (where possible) on the Durham Coast Line, would that not be cheaper than building a whole new line?
Personally I think Leamside is destined to become part of the Metro network.
The council are building a dual carriageway from Nissan/Iamp (SSTC) all the way down to the Port of Sunderland.
However cars are not planned on being imported/exported there but raw materials might, the real reason is to support the Iamp development which is intended for advanced manufacturing...

Sunderland used to have close to 1 million NR passenger's before the Metro arrived, the amount of NR services were dramatically reduced, although we do now have 6 return services a to London however we lost TPE to Liverpool and a lot of local services to Newcastle. I think the amount of services...
If the ECML done something similar with different high speed alignments taking in the the large northeast coastal towns/cities of Wearside (Sunderland) and Teesside (Middlesbrough) you'd be talking about a combined population of about one million people.
If the recent reports are correct that Sunderland's main train station might be moved to the site of the current civic centre with the entrance at Mowbray Park/Park lane Interchange, Sunderland could have a station to be proud of, good riddance to the current effort of a train station.
I know local MP's and various political parties are campaigning for better inter-city type services from/to Sunderland, so there may be something to this. Also there appears to be some movement on the improvement of Sunderland Train Station.
