    A career as a signaller

I'm on 12 hour shifts. I work 7 days and 7 nights on a 4 week cycle at grade 2, that includes 1 Sunday day shift and 1 Sunday night shift. Without overtime that's about £38k per annum if you don't contribute money to pension. Oh and don't forget that will be bumped up more with bank...

My BMI was a massive 36 at the time of my medical! Apart from the excess pounds I was healthy, no other medical issues. Nothing was even said about my weight.

Up to the LOM as well. I know a recent vacancy near me where the LOM decided to advertise internally and externally at the same time. I know sometimes this is the case because there's not much internal interest in my area.

When I started I was issued with 5 polo's, 2 work trousers, a fleece jacket and safety boots. Also got high vis trousers and jacket in case barriers fail and I have to go out to operate them. I wear the polo shirts and fleece jacket, not so much the work trousers. Usually wear my own trousers...

RDW: rest day working so overtime shift on your rest day. NA: not available? So not available on your rest day so you don't get rostered to work overtime. HIROP: higher rate of pay, specified for bank holidays so you get paid the higher bank hol rate rather than a LIROP (lower rate of pay)...

I was impatient waiting for D&A results so after about 8 days I phoned HR who raised a ticket or whatever it's called to try and find out. The next day I had all the paperwork through etc. No harm in giving them a nudge.

I had my medical recently and was waiting for the drug test results, 7 days later I phoned up HR and pushed them to chase my medical results. 3 days later I had my start date. But I do believe my LOM wants to get me started ASAP. If you're external like me then I think it all depends what...

How long have people here waited to be signed off on their panel/signal box after finishing sig school? Particularly interested in the smaller boxes G2-3? Will there be an assessment done by someone to say you're competent enough before you go on your own? Who decides when it's time? I assume...

For the practical assessments is this role playing on a sim to a given scenario? I assume you use the knowledge you've learnt to carry out the assessment successfully? Do you have an example of the scenarios you'd face in these practical assessments? Thanks

Does anyone wish to share their experience as an external candidate coming from a different background to the railway, perhaps from a more busy and dynamic external job in to a quiet-ish grade 2, 3 etc. box? I'm due to start as a signaller in the spring/summer but my current job in the private...
