Why is there now an obsession with re-nationalisation?

The history of ASLEF book (Driven by ideals) gives a different slant on the 1982 strikes and as someone who lost a lot of money from being part of the 2 day strikes from February through to Summer and then the full 2 week strike that followed its a bitter pill to swallow

What is your controversial railway opinion/idea?

Overseas owning groups bring a pool of world class talent who can show us BR has been's how it should be done.

Why is there now an obsession with re-nationalisation?

I think one of the big influencers of what makes the TOC's work well or not are the people. I don't think there are enough highly skilled competent people to go round. Under BR there would be say 5 Area Managers, a few senior Traincrew and Movements Managers for a given geographical area as an...

    Thameslink Services/Timetable from May 20th 2018

I agree Horton must go as a sacrifice at the very least. However if he did it would no doubt involve a pay off to buy his silence and he would no doubt pop up in another high paid job before the year was out.

    Thameslink Services/Timetable from May 20th 2018

the bit I cant get my head around and probably never will is how all this disruption seems to have come as a surprise to GTR. If they really did only have a couple of weeks (which I doubt) to prepare for this timetable then why didn't they have some contingency in place for unforeseen...

TRIVIA - Things you saw travelling on BR that you don't see today

A Railway that was run as a public service, lived within its means, rarely used Bustitution, could manage to deal with snow, wind/rain and was a place that felt like it was going places under the Sector Management of late 1980's early 1990's.

Northern's Problems in the North West

Network Rail sign up to these mega projects and timetable recasts with little hope on delivering to specification and to agreed timescales. The vultures in the owning groups are happy to stand side by side with N.R colleagues at contract award and then hang N.R out to dry when promises which...

    Thameslink Services/Timetable from May 20th 2018

And you take off your rose tinted glasses please. I am not blaming ASLEF if you read my post properly. I am just saying as bad as Govia/DfT are its not 100% their fault.

    Thameslink Services/Timetable from May 20th 2018

I am no fan of the current structure and governance of the Industry as my recent posts will have indicated. However I cant believe all of the TSGN shambles is solely down to the franchisee or its client. ASLEF are very good at conducting stalling tactics in negotiations and prevaricating over...

    Thameslink Services/Timetable from May 20th 2018

Nobody held a gun to the heads of Govia to sign the franchise agreement. If the franchisee thought it flawed and undeliverable then why not walk away during the standstill period.

    Scotrail Franchise - Abellio

Rubbish!!. An alliance in name only.

    Scotrail Franchise - Abellio

Everyone in TOC land likes to blame N.R when in reality the passengers relationship is with the TOC who really should do better at managing their suppliers and not just blaming them.

    Scotrail Franchise - Abellio

I read its all Network Rail's fault

    Scotrail Franchise - Abellio

Always someone else's fault with Abellio. A genuine apology from a TOC to its customers shouldn't even mention a 3rd party. The passengers relationship is with the franchisee and most don't give a toss who's fault it is when they are delayed.

    Arriva Rail North DOO

Worth a read for the flat earth brigade who think driving a 8/10/12 car train with seven hundred souls on board is so straight forwards https--assets.publishing.service.gov.uk-media-547c8fe040f0b6024100016d-R072012_120523_Kentish_Town.pdf

    Arriva Rail North DOO

I am not talking about passenger numbers or anything else other than firm principles. I assume you wouldn't fly on holiday on a POO aircraft so what's different about rail when things go wrong as two heads are always better than one. The introduction of DOO in the 1980's was made under the...

    Arriva Rail North DOO

Robert I am completely neutral about DOO its having the second safety critical person on board that I believe should be a prerequisite of all further DOO schemes and should be applied retrospectively to most if not all of the current DOO routes.
