Best Open-Top Bus Route You've Been On

No reason to market it just yet. Its target market won't arrive in the area until the schools break up. Nobody will be searching for information on it yet. They have repainted at least one of the ex Lands End Coaster half top Presidents into Jurassic Coaster livery ready for July.

First South West (Kernow & Buses of Somerset)

Thanks for that. I did think looking at the map that it must miss that stop too.

First South West (Kernow & Buses of Somerset)

Where do the deckers turn at Mousehole? Do they reverse into the car park entrance and wait there?

    Stagecoach South & South East

Don't confuse inbound tourism to Canterbury from both London and Port of Call Coach trips from Dover cruise ships with locals though. These visitors were never in the market for local bus services. I lived in East Kent for 30 years and worked for Stagecoach East Kent for 5 years at Thanet...

    Stagecoach South & South East

East Kent as an area is quite unique. It's town's are all pretty much self contained and have one of everything that most people needed. Bus travel was centered around journeys to and from Canterbury, primarily for academic purposes but also for the 'bigger shops'. However, Canterbury is now a...

Bus Seats — When Did They Change?

Stagecoach specified Callow and Maddox Urban 6 Twin seats for their interurban deliveries in the 90s. These were the individual seats with small seperate headrests. They were also found on Yorkshire Coastliner's Volvo Olympian Royales and Southern Vectis deliveries in the 90s too. As mentioned...

    Stagecoach South & South East

Yes, Heath Williams became MD in 1999 when Stagecoach South's Lewes HQ closed and management of East Kent and the Hastings area passed back to Canterbury. I'm pretty sure though that Heath never worked alongside Jeremy Cooper though. It was Jeremy Hooper (with an H) that was Commercial Manager...

    Stagecoach South & South East

It wasn't as strange as it might have seemed. Arriva had their outstation at Tenterden at the time and were still involved in the Canterbury to Hastings 400 corridor. Ashford was in dire straits at that time. It was mostly staffed by lodge drivers from other subsidiaries. Ashford's sale or...

    Stagecoach South & South East

Folkestone's closure has been expected for a long time, it's not a surprise. Stagecoach reduced it to outstation status in 1997/8 with a view to closing it back then. Engineering was split with big buses being maintained by Ashford and minibuses by Dover. Oversight of New Romney garage also...

    Stagecoach South & South East

Let's not forget that Stagecoach is now owned by, to all intents and purpose, asset strippers. Kent Road in Cheriton is prime real estate and certainly won't be the last to go. I have a feeling that what's coming down the pipeline is going to make Souter and Gloag look like preservationists in...

    Stagecoach South & South East

Changing demographics in Folkestone. High Speed rail to London has ruined the Kent Coast towns, filling them with London commuters and second homers. The towns have become dormitory ghost towns through the week and had the life and economies sucked out of them.

    Stagecoach South & South East

It's quite a fall from grace for Folkestone. It used to be second only to Herne Bay in terms of revenue.

    Stagecoach South & South East

They're taking a gamble that enough Folkestone staff will choose to transfer in order to provide the levels of service they are planning. From experience, it's almost always the case that many decide that a depot closure is a natural end and choose to either move on or retire early. Even in...

£2 Price Cap on fares in England - Now extended beyond October 2023

If there was a political element to the fare cap (other than initially May's local elections, and now the Oct 2024 General Election), I would suspect that the plan may have been (and may still be) to replace ENCTS with a universal, all age fare cap.

£2 Price Cap on fares in England - Now extended beyond October 2023

But encouraging bus ridership wasn't the aim of the scheme. It was to ease the cost of travel for those already reliant on bus travel for day to day travel.

£2 Price Cap on fares in England - Now extended beyond October 2023

Not if the longer routes are primarily leisure services. The cap is supposed to be a help with the cost of living and reducing the cost of commuting and necessary journeys, not subsidising longer distance day trips that wouldn't have been taken anyway.

£2 Price Cap on fares in England - Now extended beyond October 2023

No official announcement yet but all references to the October extension have now been deleted from at least the morebus website and socials. Taking the Bournemouth to Swanage route 50 alone, continuing in the scheme through summer would see huge losses of revenue. The route runs full and...

    Go South Coast

It's out of date. The B5TL chassis for it was discontinued by Volvo.

    Go South Coast

There won't be any new convertibles. It is no longer an option avaiable to purchase whether ferry spec was required or not. Hants and Dorset could rebuild Euro 6 buses to convertible format as they did with Go Ahead London's WVL 83/93 but that would be costly and they are full to the brim with...

    Go South Coast

Park them up where? Every SORN bus is taking up depot or yard space that could be occupied by a revenue earning asset. The situation on the Isle of Wight that saw the three displaced Swanage half top Scanias (1401-3) parked up for 6-8 months of the year when they were only 6-7 years old was...
