    Northern Service Withdrawal

There's some local discussion on the 17:53 service removal on the Huddersfield to Sheffield service - The hourly service leaves around xx:09, about 11 minutes after the service from Sheffield gets into Huddersfield - I'm not overly familiar with the service, but it appears to run as a two train...

Brilliant ! Just what I needed, thank you

Level Crossings - High Level Wigwags

Hi, has anyone on here aware of a level crossing with a high level wigwag placed above the usual level - i.e. a second unit synced to the lower unit - I've a site with visibility issues that could benefit from a high level "secondary" unit, but I can't find any examples or find anything that...

Suggestions for improving the Hope Valley route

This talk of a Hope Valley base tunnel reminds me of the proposal to slam a motorway up the Hope Valley back in the building heyday. Annoyingly I never took a photo of the albeit low detail alignment proposal that I found in a drawer when I worked at Derbyshire CC - The same drawer had options...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

You extend to what you expect usage is likely to be in the design timeframe - I’d argue that 4 carriage stoppers would be a reasonable at this point, 6 carriage stoppers are many years, probably decades away... it’s like road building, you build a new road for 20-25 year forecast, you don’t...

Would a line from Sheffield to Stocksbridge be viable? And will it happen (even if not viable!)...

Need to find the drawing out that I did in 1994 when I worked at SCC and were looking for DfT funding, it wasn’t much different to the plans from 1968/71 for the A61(M) - More here on my website. http://www.haydnvernals.co.uk/roads/urbanmot.htm

Would a line from Sheffield to Stocksbridge be viable? And will it happen (even if not viable!)...

My local prospective council out and the rest of the local Labour group are pitching a “tram train” for Beighton Village, i.e. to the old Beighton Station then a vague idea of linking back to Halfway Tram stop via a stop at Killamarsh I’d guess.... I’ve asked if any economic case has been...

Possible combination of HS2 phase 2 with "rail north'

You are aware that the Piccadilly alignment for HS2 is almost a loop from the south that hooks almost to face west ? That’s kinda 180 degrees out of alignment for Airport to Leeds, much more than a slight S shape. Ideally a HS2/NPR needs to be intersecting Piccadilly at 90 degrees, probably in...

Possible combination of HS2 phase 2 with "rail north'

To be fair, building the link to Manchester was always going to happen first, it’s the least contentious bit of 2b ! The question now is will that western leg stop at Manchester Airport until the NPR bit is more pinned down in terms of how it passes through central Manchester? The current...

Why are people opposed to HS2? (And other HS2 discussion)

My key supporting argument several years back for a Heathrow Spur was to dilute the number of HS2 trains going into Euston, not because of accommodation at Euston, more a case of where do you take the passengers from there without major upgrades to the underground and provision of Crossrail 2...

    Future of CC Voyagers?

There’s been a really good suggestion by one of the forum members that the 22x fleets could be reformed into a single four car and seven car fleet, the four car units generally used as a four plus four unit, giving a similar capacity as a seven car unit - whole fleet refurbished, good until...

Possible combination of HS2 phase 2 with "rail north'

The whole Sheffield HS2 Station debacle was a real face palm moment for local politics here for me in Sheffield - Whats been offered currently is an improvement on what Sheffield has, but sadly, not the huge step change that Meadowhall HS2 offered for Sheffield/Rotherham/Barnsley. I’m not sure...

Possible combination of HS2 phase 2 with "rail north'

Some guy on here timed a 395 sprint to 140mph as about 8 minutes over 12km, you perhaps have an argument if all trains stopped at all stations, but I’d expect to see some stations missed out on some services, especially if I was travelling from say Hull to Liverpool, or Newcastle to Manchester...

Possible combination of HS2 phase 2 with "rail north'

In addition, we have a massive shortfall in materials supply too, it’s not uncommon for black top to be shipped in 50-100 miles from three different plants on a simple road surface renewal. Suppliers need longer term assurance on projects, so they can invest sensible in new equipment to make...

Possible combination of HS2 phase 2 with "rail north'

Person power is hugely restrictive on these projects, we have a huge vacuum in professionals for design, suitably experienced operatives for site and also the huge back office operations for street works coordination, safety officers, building information management, and so on...

Possible combination of HS2 phase 2 with "rail north'

For me, the important aspect of NPR is to overlay a separate intermediate track layout that ties the second tier places into the key first tier places that HS2 ph2b serves... there must be a clear segregation from the existing classic lines, so that 225kph (or better) services can service the...

Why are people opposed to HS2? (And other HS2 discussion)

To clarify, practically all spending on government funded infrastructure is paid for in this way, not just HS2 - There are clearly schemes that give a better BCR, but across that level of money, I’d wager that you couldn’t get an average return that beats HS2
