    Terminating points on WAML

Same as the Harlow Town crossovers. No signalled routes over them, but can be used for handsignalled/unsignalled moves or within a possession.

    Terminating points on WAML

Down (Northbound): trains can stop and turn back at Tottenham Hale, Cheshunt, Broxbourne, Bishops Stortford and Audley End. While there are crossovers south of Harlow Town, there are no signalled moves over them to provide any kind of turnback move. Up (Southbound): trains can turn back at...

    HS2 Old Oak Common

This is utter genius. The country’s energy crisis gets fixed at a stroke, by attaching Brunel’s coffin to a generator as he spins in his grave.

East Coast Main Line - Problem in Northallerton area (13/03)?

Now that daylight has reached even the darkest corners of North Yorkshire, does anyone know - was it Daisy or Bambi hit?

Signal upgrade set to modernise Cornwall’s railway

Leeds North-West Workstation (at York, controlling Skipton inter alia) fringes with Hellifield.

Pontefract Monkhill railway station to gain accessibility upgrade

Probably waiting for the embankments to slip down to ground level, then it’s easier to build a lift or a ramp up to the newly-lowered track.

    Level crossing problem

Stowmarket Control? Barriers go straight down if a train passes the protecting signal at danger? Not sure if this is applicable to any of the crossings mentioned.

    London Road crossing, Bicester

Two trebuchets, two large trampolines. There’s just not enough will to think outside the box these days.

Worcester - van on track 4 March 2024

My early satnav had quite a fit when I took it on Eurostar, and it kept trying to lock on to the adjacent M2 on the Medway Viaduct.

    The last coal train?

    York’s decommissioned platforms.

The exam sidings (parallel to, and east of, platform 2) could also become a platform face. But that would only serve the Scarborough branch, for which platforms 2 and 4 are adequate. And it would also entail the loss of a lot of car parking space.

Avanti West Coast Withdraws Shrewsbury Service From June 2024

Excuse me while I shunt my train-of-thought down memory siding lane, specifically late 1970s, early 1980s. At the start and end of each term, my boarding school (in Shrewsbury) used to buy a group ticket for the 50 or more pupils based closer to London (or those returning to parents posted...

    Definition of absolute block signalling

When I did a 2-day signalling appreciation course in the 1990’s, I was told that the fundamental difference was that an AB signaller has a over-arching right of refusal to prevent trains being sent towards their box. Whereas a TCB signaller would have to invoke an emergency (e.g. the box to box...

Bradford Forster Square 4th Platform Funding Announced: what improvements would you like to see made?

Do any of the Bradford platforms ever have THREE trains in? Or is there just space for two? (Apart from platform 3 at only 100m long)

So many announcements, so few people taking them on board

And yet, with all the barrage of announcements, it’s quite rare to be told which side of the train will be against the platform. As in ‘We are now approaching Xxx - the doors will open on the left of the train.” Easy to deduce from TD maps at stations where there’s a choice, but no PA systems...

When to buy a 11-15 Zip Oyster?

Thanks all. I've put (birthday minus one month) in my diary. Conveniently, that's very close to the other child's (9th) birthday.

When to buy a 11-15 Zip Oyster?

My child is currently 10 anna bit. When I set up an Oyster Photocard account, clicked on "Buy Oyster for someone else", and put in their date-of-birth, I was offered an "Age 5-10 Zip Oyster" (with a footnote to say that it expires on their next birthday). When will that change to me being...

When the slow line becomes the fast line

To expand upon the Mains and Reliefs on the GW out of Paddington: There was a long closure of Paddington one Christmas all the way to New Year (1990s or early 2000s?), and all trains from the west were terminating at Ealing Broadway. The inter-city operator put their foot down with a firm...
