Rail connections should cater for early airline flights

TFL run the night bus service through the early hours, every 30 minutes or so. If you can get to Liverpool Street or Stratford, then Stansted isn't too difficult. Not ideal if you have bulky luggage, but it's cheaper than a taxi or an overnight hotel.

Things you don’t see outside any more

Stone horse troughs, usually with an inscription pronouncing civic pride. I've seen a couple in public places, used as planters, but the ones I knew as a child have disappeared, presumably decorating someone's garden.

Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

I did watch it back in the eighties when it was originally broadcast, but hadn't seen it since. I've always fancied Barbara Flynn and I'd forgotten how good Graham Crowden and Davis Troughton were.

Even documentaries are polluted this way. It's fair enough whilst linking between scenes or topics, but all...

    Russia invades Ukraine

There's also the impact of the disruption to production and export of food from Ukraine to areas like North Africa. If the Russians are successful in taking control of the Black Sea coast then that's going to open up a new front in the humanitarian crisis.

    Russia invades Ukraine

Oh, there isn't much more that anyone can do other than voicing support and supplying arms for fear of escalating the situation beyond what control exists. The conflict looks like continuing for months or years, so an immediate need is a concerted humanitarian effort, an area where the UK has...

    Russia invades Ukraine

There's been a lot of, frankly empty, rhetoric spouted around the world over the situation in Ukraine, not least by Boris "Winston" Johnson. The country that has impressed me the most, after Ukraine, is Poland. They've had a rather flaky relationship with the EU of late, but they have really...

Trivia: Buildings with never used railway infrastructure

Lullingstone station on the Victoria to Maidstone line was started during the thirties to serve a proposed new London Airport but never completed because of the outbreak of war and the Green Belt Act in the post-war years. The station buildings were demolished in 1955 although the platform...
