Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

Networkers begun testing in 91 didn't they? 33 years now. By the time an order is placed and work begins the oldest will be 35 years old. Given timescales seen elsewhere and the sheer number of them most will end up between 35-40 years old? Personally I like them and would give them a spruce up...

Norwich - Cambridge - Stansted future ideas

Does King's Lynn have much new housing planed? The Cambridge to Norwich line does at many stations. I think Attleborough, for example, has about 5-10k homes beside the station heading south doesn't it?

FirstGroup awarded London Cable Car contract

It makes money doesn't it? So why get rid? It's ridership numbers are higher than before covid and given ever more built in the area that'll only increase. It helps cross subsidise buses etc.

Who needs the additional rolling stock more? Southern or Southeastern Railway.

Is there a reason Plumstead is never considered? Space for half a dozen 12-car sidings. It's Network Rail land. Formerly a goods yard. Used for Crossrail construction but that's now finished. Land sitting there unused beside the existing Plumstead sidings which have access points for drivers...

[Trivia] Unstaffed stations - busiest and largest?

Deptford never seems to have staff. 1.5m a year. Many Southeastern Metro stations appear similar. Even if technically meant to be staffed some almost never see any.

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

An obvious candidate for Derby is Class 465 replacement or refurbishment. They're over 30 years old and very tired. Even if the MetCams are to go there's still around 100 BREL 4-cars remaining. Over 30 years old. Either refurb to extend to 40+ years or replace with new stock.

    Great Northern Fleet Tender

It's too simplistic to say x or y rail company needs this or that. Who is serving more metro v long distance? Commuter v leisure? What areas of population growth is x or y serving? All factors and all different even within London. For example c2c go through the vast Beam Park development...

    Great Northern Fleet Tender

Not if it results in less capacity. The plan also seems to be remove the Networkers in good condition internally (465/9s) but keep those in a rancid state (/0 and /1s) with no confirmed plans for refurbishment or replacement.

Metcam Networkers to be withdrawn at the end of the year?

Absolutely the 466s do an essential job. 4 car in the peaks would not work now (they didn't ten years ago) even with passenger numbers down to around levels in the early 2010s - and certainly not with housing growth around many SouthEastern stations in London. Kidbrooke, Dartford, Lewisham...

Metcam Networkers to be withdrawn at the end of the year?

I'm trying to think back to around 2018. Was it around then that the Victoria to Dartford's started running past 8pm and longer than four car in the peaks? I shudder at how overcrowded and bad it was. Let's not go back to that even with passengers numbers down since 2020. With all the new...

    Great Northern Fleet Tender

A lot of this talk doesn't look at the wider context (I suspect the DFT doesn't either) which is population growth, new housing growth and where demand in the near future could or will come from. It's a bold - or stupid - decision to bin off stock if that happens in areas seeing some of the...

    Great Northern Fleet Tender

Can SE get away with timetable adjustments or reducing train lengths? Don't they serve some of the biggest areas of housing growth in the country? Places like Lewisham are seeing towers sprout up everywhere and many aren't even occupied yet.

    Great Northern Fleet Tender

That's a hell of a lot of carriages going. Around 160 coaches gone. Quite a reduction in capacity surely at Southeastern as not enough 377s to compensate?

Metcam Networkers to be withdrawn at the end of the year?

Yeah that is a hell of a lot of carriages gone on Southeastern if all the MetCams go. Also still no plan for 97 x 4 car remaining BRELs. Refurb or replace? Tender been out for very long time now with no announcement.
  17. S

Metcam Networkers to be withdrawn at the end of the year?

Removing all MetCam 465s leaves 97 4-car BREL networkers. Not enough existing third rail stock to replace those anytime soon. There's also 29 2-car Class 466s still running.
  18. S

Metcam Networkers to be withdrawn at the end of the year?

The MetCam ones are far nicer inside and wasn't it stated more reliable than the BRELs despite retractioning? Maybe lease costs are higher. The BRELs are dismal inside

London Overground class 378s at London Bridge this Sunday 25/02/2024, and Easter Sunday 31/03/2024

TSGN have a year then to get 379s signed off from DaFT to free up 387s and bolster other services? Unlikely I'd say by Jan 2025. Maybe mid 2025 timetable change?
