Governance of Rail Replacement Bus Services

Not CAN complain but MUST complain. Every time. Silence denotes assent and TOCs will take the lack of a complaint as an indication of satisfaction!

Are too loud and too many PRM alarms and announcements making travellers uptight.....

The passport check at St Pancras is for entry into France, after which the Schengen arrangements apply.

    Cologne station safe?

I was in Cologne last weekend and stayed at the IBIS Hotel which is part of the main station. The city generally and station particularly were very busy with a mix of local people, German visitors to the wonderful Christmas Markets and not a few visitors from other countries. There was a very...

Are too loud and too many PRM alarms and announcements making travellers uptight.....

I seriously believe that the frequency of trivial and unnecessary announcements at stations (especially on London Transport) causes most people to switch off concentration so that when there is an announcement in an emergency, it takes valuable seconds before people start listening. I wish the...

    DB Seat Reservation refund

DB really have lost the plot! I’m still waiting for the DB Cards I ordered despite numerous e-mails and telephone calls. My advice is not to bother trying to resolve problems on line. Pursuing your loss via your credit card company seems like an effective alternative.

    Eurostar bans spirits onboard

As we are still part of the EU, by definition there is no ‘duty free’ going to and from France on Eurostar (or the Shuttle or Ferries for that matter). What happens if the lunatics manage to get the UK out of the Union without an appropriate deal is another matter of course.

    DB Seat Reservation refund

Out of interest, has anyone ever received a reply from DB? Apart from automatic acknowledgements and being told that my message was being passed to the appropriate department, I’ve had nothing by way of actual answers to queries recently about purchase of DB Cards.

    First Group: General Discussion

I’d rather be in cloud cuckoo land than where you are. The need is for positive thinking. Possibly some Councils don’t have much money but the likes of Greater Manchester are better placed to pursue a policy for better public transport - which can hardly be described as unimportant. I guess that...

    First Group: General Discussion

This is an ideal opportunity for Councils to take back buses into public ownership. First Greater Manchester would be a good starter. Perhaps the Mayor should get in early and start the ball rolling. If First Group services are merely sold off to the likes of Stagecoach, they will still be...

    Standing passengers Birmingham 1950.

And, of And of course, because most bus drivers these days seem to think that the maximum number is when no more can squeeze on!

    Bus Frequencies

Thanks for all these comments. Of course I realise that ‘up to’ may sound better than ‘down to’ but it is incorrect (and the Whiskers advert is correct!). I wish bus companies would stop thinking they can con customers in this way. It could be that it’s not working in the light of recent...

    Bus Frequencies

I am often amused (actually irritated) when I see buses with a poster showing ‘Up to every 10 minutes’ for the route concerned. In reality, these services never run more frequently than every 10 minutes and outside peak periods often run at frequencies of 30 minutes or more. Why then don’t bus...

TRIVIA: Operators that use the 12-hour clock

But you are adding to the confusion by referring to 12 o’clock in the afternoon! It is 12 NOON (or midday) or 12 Midnight. Too many people and organisations these days refer to ‘12 AM’ and ‘12 PM’, which have no validity and lead to confusion, especially where the services concerned operate...

    French Train Strike advice

My experience is that, latterly, support for strikes has been reducing. I changed to air for a planned trip to Nice on 12th June but in fact my planned Eurostar and SNCF trains operated (but I got my money back beforehand!). I avoided SNCF for a trip to Switzerland last month by taking the...

    Basel Trams to St. Louise

On the Basel Network Map LEYMEN is bordered by a green dotted line to indicate that it is in France and NOT included in the Basel ticket zones. The Basel tickets issued by hotels covers Zones 10, 11 15 and the customs free road to the Airport (Bus 50) covered by Zone 13. You can buy a zone...

    Leeds/York to Homerton Hospital - Take 2.

I hope this helps and isn't too late. See the 'Train Manager' and ask him/her. Last Monday, at Newark, a taxi was provided for a passenger going to Beverley when the train was terminated by the 'wires down' incident. Don't accept anything other than a promise to get you home - by taxi if...

Overhead wire damage near Retford 10/04 - Major delays for the rest of today

I know American visitors can be a bit 'loud', but you could have killed them with kindness and eased their burden and yours: They would have been enthralled by your explanation of what Peterborough is and possibly the upset to their holiday might have been eased by a bit of English (sorry...

Overhead wire damage near Retford 10/04 - Major delays for the rest of today

Stopped South of Newark on 0935 King's Cross to Leeds which will be terminated at Newark, apparently. No information yet about onward travel to Leeds apart from transfer to a diesel train for diversionary route to Doncaster. It's really time these overhead line issues on the ECML were sorted.
